My school district has cancelled school again. My dad had a rant β€œit is weather, for G-D’s sake! Move on people! Life continues!” This mild mannered physicist turns into ranting caveman when school is cancelled. Does anything effect you like this?

Yes. Every time a failure to control the vehicle is reported as an "accident", and every time it is reported that a car (not a Tesla) tried to cause an "accident" by "sliding into a ditch", "turning into oncoming traffic", or anything remotely similar that cars just DO NOT DO without a human mishandling the controls.

Using “sexy” to describe something you wouldn’t normally have sex with. The imagery involved with that ruins my appetite. I avoid fast food a lot just to avoid some asshole putting her period blood or his spooge in my sandwich.

What are you talking about? No one used the word “sexy”. However, your comment made me want to hurl.

Schools in Yakutsk are always open and that’s in Siberia where it’s this temperature the Americans can’t handle.

Why? The military is built up along the border with North Korea there. That is also where the pacific fleet ports. Dude, it’s just crawling with the authorities.

Yes. When Democrats claim separating kids from their parents at the border is WRONG but killing a baby up to birth is OK. What kind of skewed moral compass is this?

Conservatives claiming to be "pro life" up until the baby is born and then saying it is not their responsibility to take care of it.

Unfortunately you are not aware that there are literally 1000’s of parents PRAYING for a baby to adopt. They don’t care about the color, the sex or the nationality. Just want a baby. They go to Russia and China looking for a baby because American women prefer abortions. Very sad.

Actually, we don’t give Americans babies anymore. You have to go to Ukraine now.

No, I’ve never gotten upset when things are cancelled. A student in Iowa died to the weather. The local news has said there have been 8 fatalities so far. This is not anything to bring children out in. Buses can break down in this weather. There has been a lot of drifting over roads this week with the strong winds. Better to be safe. Life is for the living.

Make your Dad a hot chocolate and tell him this too shall pass. 😺

The Iowa death is tragic, of course! But, I looked it up. This was not a child. It was a college student.

Yeah, he was 18.

I’m saying why risk having kids go out in this weather? Especially grade school kids.

GrandmaALiCE
01/31/19 1:02 pm

Oh, I agree with you. For one thing, there’s the problem of having kids wait outside for a school bus. And some kids walk to school.

On the other hand, to back up RT’s dad a bit ... I was at the mall earlier today. There were a bunch of kids there, who presumably had school cancelled. You might think, if they could get to the mall, they could get to school.

Still, I think it was a good call to cancel school around here. Wind chills in the early morning were in the minus 20’s!

Here’s why I looked up more about the student in Iowa. I was thinking, how terrible that some kid was out in the cold, walking to school and died. Really, that would be unconscionable.

But, it’s a bit mysterious. The article said, “The college student was sending messages via Snapchat to his girlfriend late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, indicating that he was going to bed and had no intention of going out.”

Then, they found him at 2:45 AM. I wonder where he decided to go, in the middle of the night and why he couldn’t get back home, out of the freezing cold. ???

Like deaths here (we had one last year). They are alcohol or drug related.

In Russia the good rule of thumb is that if they are found with clothes on, there will be alcohol or drugs involved. If not, they somehow got trapped outside, we conscious and went through all the tiers of hypothermia. Towards the end, the person begins to shed their clothing, thinking they are hot.

GrandmaALiCE
01/31/19 4:06 pm

That makes sense, but the article says they found no sign of alcohol. I just don’t know. It’s tragic, in any case.

Looking at the alleyway in which he was found, it looks very slick. I wonder if he fell and just could not get his footing to get back up. That happens sometimes back home, especially on black ice.

GrandmaALiCE

Yes, that’s likely. But, why did he go out? I guess, we’ll never know.

There are certain relatives in my life I've begun to do that with. The part that I hate most is when they expect you to accommodate their lateness.

Cant count the number of times I've waited around over an hour for dinner or some other event, only to have them then be dumbfounded when I want to leave after only seeing them a short time.

No.

I also don't understand the anger for it being cancelled. I mean, so what? The days will be made up and students will get the instruction. It doesn't hurt anyone to skip a day as it's just like a holiday. But, it could be life saving for someone. Or, even if not life saving, maybe it just keeps someone out of a dangerous circumstance. Either way, when looking back on snow days later in life, there is nothing evil, bad, or detrimental that can comes from it and life just goes on.

It hurts working parents who have to scramble to find childcare. It teaches that “if the weather is bad, you let it stop you” rather than “it’s weather, it happens, learn to deal with it”.

Per my dad.

Not really, but my kids would love a snow day. Utah doesn’t cancel for cold and would only consider a 2 hour delay if there were a few feet of snow.

Seems tame for a rant and it sounds like an answer to a rant of your own. Did you complain about something to prompt this "rant"?

Nope, I’m homeschooled. His rants are not “red faced yelling vulgar rants”. More like an extended commentary on the softness of American youth.

If I have to hear one more time about how they all took potatoes to school, carved their initials in them, set them around the stove/furnace and had delicious potatoes for lunch, I may smack him lol. Although Mischa did ask him the other day, “Seems dietarily restrictive. Did you get rickets?” which he actually chuckled at, to my surprise.

He has some “old school” ideas. Though to be fair, I never once had a snow day in Petersburg and it’s only 458 miles from the arctic circle. Which is not as far as San Diego to San Francisco. Only once in the time since the great patriotic war did Moscow cancel school because of weather and that was last year. It caused a huge outcry lol
