Why would an SoH’er not honestly and fully reflect their demographics (age, gender, income, location and political affiliation) in their profile?
I suspect anyone could lie online. As to reasons why, I don’t know.
Alter the outcomes of a particular group, especially if someone had multiple accounts.
Same reason why I refuse to post my picture it's nobody's business. I've told people I live in upstate NY near Rochester. That's all you'll get. Deal with it. I've dealt with serious douchenozzles on Facebook. I'm not dealing with that shit on here
Lady ... here’s another tissue! Your political preference reveals nothing about you!
I would guess that it has to do with privacy. Not everyone is comfortable sharing every aspect of their life. Sometimes, even demographics are too much.
But, nobody can see your demographics.
Think, I agree with you on this. I don’t under why people don’t fully fill out their demographics.
Is that any different than the numerous false statements you make on a daily basis?? If I had to guess who fudges their info on SOH, you’d be at the top of my list.
TJ ... your view is so skewed so as to be irrelevant.
Precisely why they don’t fill them in. You make a judgement on their poll answers based on the demos. I think it may even be more honest not to share them.
TJ. That type of comment you made is inappropriate
How so? Does the truth hurt?
I think most of mine is there and the one thing that may not be is my exact location because that actually does need to be kept from some individuals. I don't suspect anyone on here would be a problem but I don't know that.
Mostly, it is none of anyone’s business. Unless, they wish to say otherwise.
Who know what the owner of this app or any other does with your data.
Ron ... did I miss the part where they’re harvesting your social security details or bank accounts? If SOH doesn’t know that you’re a rock solid boomer that’s madly in love with the same girl for the better part of a century, who lives in the NE with rabid conservative tendencies after spending nearly a lifetime in the IT industry, then they’re NOT too good at the harvesting.
And if they also don’t know that Ms Ron doesn’t help with traditionally masculine tasks like scooping the snow, then they’re deaf.
Think, I only store those things on FB!
The profile (just looked) isn’t much on this app.
I like on my income. The rest is ok.
On FB nothing is true. This app is for poll info. Party, age, income.
I never give my real birthday on anything. I don’t underestimate the power of intrusion on the internet.
Think, that Silent quad chopper over my house scares me. I tell my wife to wear my cloths when she out chopping ice today.
I picked a zip code because it doesn't allow non-American zip codes.
Is that really your arm?
Ya, Zim those bisceps look kinda wimpy from here ...
Rons- yes, you only now have seen my profile picture?
Forearm looks great. How long have you been lifting? Today I did flies 50lb @ 30 reps, 70 @ 20, 90 @ 10, 110 @ 10. I’ve spend a week with higher reps and less weights. All chest today, finish with triceps.
That’s awesome Rons, been lifting since I was a teenager!
People like privacy. Nothing wrong with that.
Mitch ... thanks for confirming your cowardice! Please explain how accurately describing your demographics in SNY WAY exposes your privacy!
Big brother is watching you. Cookies and IP addresses make it impossible to be anonymous on the internet.
Cal ... breath.
I mean most of your online activities are monitored by at least big businesses. I don't SOH is monitored much though.
Then again the company that owns SOH focuses on collecting and selling data, so it probably is.
Mitch ... is that why you cowardly don’t share you demographics?
I'm pretty sure my profile is on public, isn't it?
Mitch ... are you afraid to share your gender?
Didn't realize that was something you can do on this app. Pretty sure most people can figure out my gender anyways.
Since you know my username literally has the word man in it.
Geez, Think, mitchman didn’t even say that he fudged his own demographic info for reasons of privacy; he only mentioned it as a reason why some users might do so. He may indeed do that himself, but you jumped on him without knowing for sure.
And how exactly is it “cowardly” anyway? I know there are users (some of them very conservative) who don’t want their personal demographic info to be known to an online company. Look at all the people who won’t use an Amazon Echo device, or who have left Facebook (or have never had an account there at all) because of privacy concerns.
Do you call ALL OF THEM cowards?
Susan ... your response is curious and reveals as much about you as Mitch! I challenged his silly responses. Period. He then refused to address the question honestly.
I get that many leftists are confused about honesty, but why wouldn’t lying about your demographics be dishonest?
This is pretty weird.
Good grief, Think! What the hell is wrong with you? And why are you joshing with rons up where *he* made almost the same suggestion as mitchman? Why aren’t you calling ron a coward too? Why do you pick on “leftists” all the time?
*I* don’t misrepresent *myself* in the demographic info here *at all.* I’m practically an open book about where, what, and who I am. (One user, no longer with us, knows exactly what part of what street I live on, because I mentioned a church that’s down the block from me and she used to go to that church. I have a link to my Instagram account on my profile, which has my whole name, and from my pictures anyone can find out a *lot* about me. I’ve mentioned where I’ve worked and earned my degrees. I’ve mentioned my age, and I’ve had people wish me happy birthday here (and make polls about it, when that was a thing.) There’s a *lot* of info one could find out about me, if they wanted. And that goes for other users as much as for the current SOH overlords.
I’m *only* saying that I think there are quite a few users who don’t want to divulge even that much of their personal info, even just to the SOH overlords where other users won’t see it. In my experience, most of the people who seem to be most concerned about privacy of info are more likely to be conservative than liberal, but I didn’t even mention that because I don’t like it when virtually everything is made out to be political.
I know one *very* conservative user who put in a ZIP code for a completely different state than where they live, because they didn’t want their vote on a poll to be known to other users - which was only an issue early in the voting history of the poll, but they were still *very* protective of their location.
I wholeheartedly agree with Mitch and Susan. Wanting to be private is not equal to being a coward in the slightest. You are way overreacting and making assumptions with not enough (or no) basis. I don't put much of my info on here in case one of my students or a student in my school happened to join. I'm not a coward, just careful and private.
And why the bloody hell do you have to throw in idiotic things like that jab about “many leftists” being “confused about honesty”? That just... wrong. And for the record, I’m about as honest as they come (although I have no way of proving that to you). You almost always do crap like that. Most of the time, knowing that you do that keeps me from even commenting or replying to you at all. But with a statement as simple and true as what mitch wrote, I just couldn’t stop myself.
I think I’ll leave now before it gets worse.
As it always does. (I’ll never learn, I guess...)
Kay ... how is sharing your gender in ANY way equivalent to “not private”? I’m not suggesting that anyone should share social security numbers or bank info, this is about anonymously sharing your gender and age.
I agree it's not the same. However, it isn't cowardly to choose not to. It's silly and ridiculous to say otherwise.
Otherwise, it would be cowardly to not show your picture. I mean, no one can find you just based on a tiny profile. But, I guess you might be too "cowardly" to do so, huh? Oh, and how about putting your town in your location line. It's funny how it is only cowardly if you are willing to do it
To each their own. Whatever people choose to share is up to them and has nothing to do with cowardice.
I’ve seen people criticize users for not using a photo of themselves as their profile picture. I think something like the equivalent of “coward” was used. (And of course I don’t agree with that; I’m just pointing out that some other users think so.) And I don’t use a photo of myself because (1) I don’t like looking at myself and I don’t want to impose that on everyone else either, (2) I think it’s more fun to find something else to use anyway.
Well, there is that photo of me as a 6-year-old cowgirl (pointing a capgun) that Tony liked...
I agree, Susan. Just pointing out the absurdity of his comments.
Kay ... first I’d observe that the response is out of proportion. You agree that sharing the demographic data asked for by SoH isn’t either onerous nor revealing yet you suggest that its privacy concerns that explain not sharing.
I just don’t see that at all. It seems that the only reason for not sharing your age is to thwart the aggregation of demographics.
Well, sorry that you are so single minded that you can't see beyond the reason you might choose to not leave out the demographics. The rest of us are open-minded and can understand other's decisions.
Kay ... methinks that it is you who is closed minded. Just saying.
You still haven’t done your “coward” trip on rons.
Think calling someone else closeminded? 🙄
After Ebola’s hack I didn’t feel that my info was safe. Therefore I changed my zip code to another one in NY (I live in NY, just not at the zip I entered). I figure this won’t change the demo but will also protect me if someone gets into my account. My other info is accurate as it’s nothing private or personal.
Someone broke into Ebola’s account and started posting stuff that @Ebola would never say trying to make him look bad. Admin finally shut that account down causing Ebola to have to make a new one. However, when someone has access to your account they can look at your info and see what you’ve entered.
@Think.....because I enjoy and exercise my right to privacy.....
Sent ... thanks for confirming your cowardice.
Sent ... I understand your confusion on how and when to use the callout feature of SoH. It requires thought.
Better luck next time.
Okay, Joe, frank,Mike,John, ect.....what is good for the goose, is goosier for me!.....
It requires thought? Maybe what’s required is correct information. (Is it noted in any SOH info exactly *how* to tag users correctly? It may be just “word of mouth” at this point.)
Sentinel, (maybe you already know this, but...) when you want to tag someone you have to have blank spaces on both sides of the @username text (unless it’s at the beginning of a paragraph, and then you don’t need the blank space before it). Your quote marks would prevent Think from receiving a notification for where you tagged him. (Although it’s not really necessary to tag someone in a thread where they’ve already posted; they’ll get a notification just for the reply in the thread, with the probably rare exception that they have notifications turned off for replies and on for tags.)
Thank You Susanr for the assist and clarification.....
Idk but when I came back after being hacked I used some false information. Now my profile is correct. I still have to use a VPN to connect as apparently SOH has my IP blocked.
Ebola ... that’s terrible. SOH should NOT be blocking you!
I think they’re blocking my IP to block the hacker. I’m not sure they ever identified who it was. I was never able to retrieve my old account so I lost my power user status along with all my followers and everyone I followed and had to start over with this account.
Ebola ... that’s too bad. SoH should have restored your status.
Strange that they would block your IP to stop the hacker. Unless the hacker was in your house, they would not have your same IP address.
They hacked my password and signed in as me.
Yeah, but your IP is tied to your computer or the device you use, not your account. So unless they logged in on your device, the offending IP address is not yours.
It’s very cowardly.
