I do not. I do have an app that will allow me to. I can recall when we used to when I was a child.

Yes (sort of, it’s not limited to just police or emergency bands) to the first part, but no to the second.

Actually I downloaded an app on my cell phone that makes it a police scanner.
One afternoon about five blocks from where I live there was a man who entered a pawnshop and attempted to rob the store. The pond store owner shot the man who fled. The police caught up with the robber some blocks away where they arrested him hiding in a trashcan. I listen to the whole thing.

Why buy the hardware when there’s an app for that?...

The app does work, I have it, but you are limited to whatever channel(s) they decide to include on the feed. With hardware, I can hold on just the channel I am interested in...and choose which channels I want to monitor ...

True. And some channels are encrypted or only semi-functional.

In my area, dispatch for fire and police are in the open...but many Narcotic and Investigator channels are encrypted ... I get that , I’ve been on the other side of the microphone when I was in law enforcement... I can tell you , the new systems are technologically daunting to set up in my area (Dallas,TX)... I would doubt many bad guys would spend the time to set up a unit to listen ... even the channels in the open require an APCO 25 Phase 2 receiver, and the knowledge to set it up...

I have in the past. They were really fun to listen to when cordless phones were popular. Boy, the crap you could hear on a phone. Discovered a drug sting that was going down by the cops in a residential area along with other interesting stuff.

Depends on where you live... near a big city there is a lot going on .. all the time ...

That’s the problem. A buddy of mine has one, and it just sounds like non-stop chatter and code-talk. Not really my idea of entertainment, and large cities have no shortage on stupid...

For folks like me (former law enforcement), I understand the codes, and find it interesting...

Having been in Law Enforcement for 13 years, I still like to know what’s going on at the department ...

You would be surprised at the technology required these days , most departments have gone digital, and the required radio equipment quite advanced (computer controlled)...
