Shantel Witt has been charged with manslaughter after hitting & killing a cyclist. Prosecutors allege Shantel had ~11 medications in her system at the time of the crash, including her dog’s Xanax. Do you feel manslaughter is an appropriate charge?

Kind of an aside bc she’s obviously got issues aside from her legal ones... my last cat was on Prozac for anxiety. She’d get stressed and lick herself bald until her little nipples bled. I believe it was a low dose but I got it at CVS. It’s not unheard of for an animal to get a human med. Even viagra (for the heart/circulation???). I’d never take my pets human med though...

I think it fits Oregon's definition of manslaughter unfortunately.

If I was the DA I would still charge her with murder as she new that her actions could affect someone, although the death wasnt premeditated...

Side note, last time I tried pulling these I had to go through the townhall website back in 06 and it was terrible. I'm glad Oregon has gotten its digital act together.

From reading the article, I’m guessing that she was trying to kill herself and didn’t care who she took with her.

Let’s see.

11 different medications including Xanax, 3 beers, and a gun in the car. Some of the meds are designed to impair you so you can’t drive.

Based upon this, I think she was trying to kill herself. Going for the drive makes me think she didn’t care who she took with her.

Who gives a dog a prescription for Xanax?

I have a feeling our tax dollars paid for that dog Xanax

This was my question. Why on earth would someone give a dog Xanax?!! What’s next... Miracle Gro starts putting Prozac in their plant food?

I gave my dog CBD oil to ease her pain when she was dying of cancer. Poor thing. That was really hard. I loved that dog

It’s no different than drunk driving

How is that manslaughter but if I have three beers and do the same thing it’s murder?

Isn’t it manslaughter for that too?

Not in California. I think in Nevada too. It’s state law. They’re all different

Breck-I’m not an expert on Oregon law...but this was my first thought. Frankly...it seems worse given that she was illegally using a drug.

Also, if you’re drunk driving and a sober driver runs the stop sign and kills your passengers, then you’re completely at fault and the sober driver gets off Scott free.

I think most states treat drugs the same as DWI unless it’s like PCP and there is proof the driver intended on killing someone. It’s unclear from the article but seems that most of the drugs were prescribed for mental issues except the Xanax.
