Due to poor economic times and an Islamic government, much of Egypt's once well protected treasures are being looted and destroyed. Should the international community step in to save ancient Egypt from the current Egypt?
It's such a shame, I bet the international community would donate funds to again protect and preserve our shared historic artifacts. There are even pyramids on our money for crying out loud. Watching the Buddhas get blown up in Afghanistan was painful enough.
Yes, but not militarily.
How is it the is Islamic governments fault..?
Oh, first comment.
Should the international community? Yes. Should the US? No.
First off, they don't like us to much. And secondly, we sorta do have our own nation to deal with.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
But who do they like enough to allow to come in and take what they can to place in foreign museums and place foreign guards at places like the great pyramids, Sphinx, various temples, etc?
Tough call. As much as I think we should protect all the history. (Huge archeology nut). We shouldn't go in unless asked by their govt. Makes me sad that people would destroy things like that. (Or steal them)
Did the new government do away with the Egyptian antiquities board? I thought they were a pretty strong organization.
Mubarik, despite how anyone feels, was extremely protective of its history and his armed guards were the only thing stopping what's going on now
Is it true that a growing faction in Egypt wants to destroy the pyramids because they represent ancient Egyptian pagan culture?
Not looking for an argument, or comments on how crazy this sounds (yes, I'm looking at you, RandFan).
Yes, From what I've read and heard, it is true.
They also oppose western tourism
America should stay the hell out of it, if anyone wants to help (for once) go ahead!
Nope. Let it burn.
I'm not sure what should be done, but I do think something should be done. That is not just Egypt's history, that is the history of Africa, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and the entirety of Western culture. It has to be saved.
If I were an eccentric billionaire, I'd probably fund a quiet expedition to Egypt. I'd back a modern-day Lord Elgin.
I don't think it's in the best interest of the US. At least not right now and not with current tensions. There are other things we need to worry about.
What about the UN?
Maybe...not sure they're too efficient with things like this though.
If a private entity took it into their own hands that might be better.
Agreed, it should be an impartial organization, not a state
"Step in" from my perspective, of course, doesn't mean troops or more aid...but a worldwide protest and private orgs putting pressure is the only way we can retain that part of human history.
I can go with that
To me, it would be hard to explain to my daughter why my generation let them destroy it for money and greed.
that makes sense. I was thinking actual military or police intervention.
There is only so much history left and due to greed its being destroyed. I think if there is anything anyone can do to stop that they should.
Maybe we should just mind our own business for once
We agree/disagree with the exact same groups. Lol.
Sorry.... That's the first time I've seen that.
The question didn't say the US military, but an intervention of some kind, like say... The UN?
Oh wow, we do. We also agree 62% of the time, I think that might be my highest yet.
Yes but not by using violence. I would support a non-state linked protest group.
Off topic, but I'd like to say so far you're the only person who I agree with 72% of the time. That's the highest I've seen lol
Well rebel...looks like we agree with the exact same groups...
Well played 2.0...well played...
I find it ironic that Rebel and I most often disagree with the same groups!
Perhaps we agree on most things, rand, but obviously we are worlds apart on self defense rights.
Only if the "world community" is willing to split the cost.
America has enough on the credit card.
So yes, but with conditions.
Why is your font so much larger than all the other comments?
If som country other than us wants to, sure! Otherwise I feel like it'll just create some big issues with this Islamic government. More than we already have, that is.
I'm a historian. So you can guess what I chose.
I added the Islamic government bit to highlight what's being said within Egypt. That the Islamic government isn't interested in protecting Pre-Islamic history in Egypt.
