Do you think the summit between the United States and North Korea would have also happened if Hillary Clinton were president?

Not sure. I think Trump’s whole “crazy guy” Schtick helped, but Clinton is kind of a Warhawk. I think she would have been a credible threat to North Korea in a way Obama never was. Overall I think Trump was better at getting North Korea to the table, but Clinton would have been better at getting something useful to come of it.

IF she could have brokered a deal, she would handed him a goofy reset button or CDs or some other inane symbol of friendship.... One thing is for sure, the media would have loved it and heralded it as historic and record shattering.

DPRK came to the US offering peace talks. The initiative was not on Trump or any other potential president. The backlash that any president would have faced for completely refusing them would have been enormous.

Only if North Korea agreed to give some sort of large donation to the Clinton foundation through their Canadian arm.

Am I the only one who thinks “summit” is a bit strong to describe what turned out to be some shaking of hands and a photo op in front of a bank of flags? I read that the total conversation time amounted to around 45 minutes. Maybe “NK-US chat over coffee” would be a little more appropriate although it admittedly doesn’t have the gravitas that “summit” has.

Well, a summit in terms of politics only means the meeting of two+ heads of government so it works well.

cvandykemo

@Herring By strict definition, yes, it was a summit. It just feels to me like what we call a “summit” should be substantive and actually, you know, accomplish something?

@Think I see we have different definitions of progress. The agreement that came out of this meeting was basically a rehash of previous ones that NK went on to violate. See, for example:

www.newsweek.com/did-trump-and-kim-make-history-how-summit-document-compares-past-agreements-971551

qz.com/1303378/trump-kim-summit-us-presidents-who-signed-deals-with-north-korea/

I do not consider this progress. Perhaps you are aware of something else that came out of the meeting? Please do share with us.

This breaks a long precedent on how we deal with these issues, regardless of political party. Obama said he would advocate this type of approach before he became president. Obviously the powers that are not just talking heads advised him otherwise. There was obviously a change from those powers for whatever reason. Time will tell if this move to legitimize will be the correct one. I personally feel that NK will mostly play nice but I’m not sure what this opens the door to in the future with other developing nations.

I agree AP. I am about as anti trump as anyone but I was anti hillary way before and this is one of the biggest reasons. Trump may not have been the actual decider on us taking this different approach but he’s absolutely the better face, being so charismatic toward Kim. Did you see his smile when he looked at trump? πŸ˜ƒ I bet he was thinking to himself “Wow! I’m standing next to the guy in Little Rascals and Home Alone 2!” πŸ˜‚ Hillary would have just given him some stupid symbolic piece of plastic and Kim would’ve been straight faced and up tight. Right now I wouldn't be surprised if China has a lot to do with it. Something along the lines of President Xi deciding that he's solidified power both domestically and within the Chinese sphere of influence to the point where a nuclear NK is just too much of a liability. Successful long range missile testing ups the risk at the same time that Kim's strategic usefulness is declining. Heck, this summit comes around right as China and NK are wrapping up some super secret meetings.

Point is, Trump's pressure on NK wasn't meaningless, but Xi would probably be pressuring Kim to deescalate on his end anyway.
