Now that net neutrality rules have been officially repealed by the FCC, do you think that internet speeds and costs will significantly change (for better or for worse)?
Reading the comments I wonder how many that say it will be worse or were against removing net neutrality was bad really understand what it does. It was installed in 2015 and shifted the classification od ISPs to be a class 2 company as AT&T was making the FCC responsible for policing them and not the FTC and AGs. This was to favor the ISPs. The FCC cannot react as fast as the FTC and AGs. Not much will change unless the ISPs try to throttle or restrict then the AGs and FTC will sue them again as they did to Comcast when they throttled bittourent which was done before net neutrality.
Yes, but only in the long run. I doubt ISPs will want bad press so soon
People are overreacting to this Net Neutrality crap.
I doubt much is gonna happen.
IT BETTER NOT BECAUSE FRONTIER FUCKING SUCKS, HOW CAN IT SUCK ANY WORSE????
Nothing is gonna change just like there was no change when it was instituted.
Now that we’ve purged the Obama nonsense, the internet will improve. The only thing that’s could improve it more would be to crush the remaining monopolies.
I'm putting my money on this getting worse for the consumer and better for the shareholders.
Yes unless the state’s keep pushing back with their own laws.
I’m in a southern state that doesn’t give a rat’s ass about net neutrality so I’m probably screwed. Thanks Trump.
No, only idiots believe that. Before 2015 we never had net neutrality and there weren't any problems. It's just a bunch of fear mongering cry babies.
You sir are not trying hard enough to tell people you’re republican speak up
Mac ... you are trying too hard to tow the leftist lie. Relax, you will be better off without yet another Obama lie!
I'm actually far from republican, but nice try.
Lmao only one reason why majority of males would vote against it 😏
It’s not about speeds. It’s about prohibited sites and regulation from a common carrier.
For sure worse. It’s one reason why anti monopoly acts were invoked. The lack of choice will encourage greedy companies to disembowel consumers once they get the green light.
Black ... your tinfoil hat is slipping, and needs a wee adjustment.
You must work for ATT
Black ... nope, but I want the monopolies broken up and the inept government removed from the internet.
Without the government regulating the internet (or other industries too) it will just become the old west and greedy Giant corporations will control what you see and how fast you will see it -assuming one can afford it at all going forward .
Black ... you’re ridiculous! I get that you need to be swaddled in the inept arms of the government to feel safe, but the reality is that you pay for that with higher prices, poorer function and the death to innovation.
Whether it was the phone company deregulation or airline deregulation, getting the inept government out of both industries made a huge difference for consumers.
The government is just the Sherif - not n the industry and prevent these giant corps from gouging the public or selling them crap and dangerous products
Should open the market. We should see better deals on what you get with what you pay.
Exactly! Now let’s eliminate the remaining monopolies and watch the internet become even better!
Surly people can remember the growths of the internet before net neutrality. In comparison to the stalemate internet we have.
Delusional. Name one deal like this that was ever beneficial to the consumer
Black ... I get that you’re a millennial — or younger — so your ignorance is excused. Many of us watched as the government did the right thing in breaking up the telephone monopoly. That had a huge positive impact on our choices.
At the time, there many small-minded people who believed that deregulation would be catastrophic, we have 40 years of proof that shows how wrong those leftists were.
You must have onset dementia or brainwashed by Trumpniks crew. Bush’s deregulation of financial institutions almost caused a depression were it not for the OBama administration restoring regulations. Same thing is happening with deregulating the environment . We already see huge damage being caused by polluters like the Koch boys that generations after Trumpniks regime is long gone that your grandchildren’s grandchildren will have to clean up if possible . Pruitt just allowed dumping of sewage into rivers and allowed offshore drillers not to have to clean up their mess when holes go dry.
Black the evidence is right in front of you how many small isps do we have?
Not a question of large or small providers - it’s the giant corps controlling the speed to whom they like or dislike by charging higher rates to who buys in order to get fast or slow service. Example : ATT could drive Netflix out of business if they charge Netflix whatever
they want . Now with net neutral , also a government reg , isps couldn’t throttle the internet at will.
Black ... come back when you understand basic economics.
Black I don't do this very often but I'm going to have to agree with think on this.
If your presumption is correct that the big Industries would discriminately charge their customers under the lack of net neutrality small isps would be able to take their place and have the favor of the customer at mind.
If your presumption is correct supply and demand would take over and somebody would fill that niche.
Robert ... come towards the light and out of the darkness. Life is so much easier and simpler when you let go of the leftist shackles that bind your mind.
Not a question of economics . It’s about control of the internet . Under this new Trump reg the internet is no longer available equally to all ; as, it has been up to now. If you like corporations making gross profits off your freedom, that’s your choice;but , henceforth these big ISPs will have a monopoly on what you can view via exorbitant pricing to other companies and being able to throttle the internet to speeds that few will be able to pay. So then these ISP s will control content and market.
> no a leftist.
Black ... thanks for showing that it is in fact all about the economics, which you simply don’t understand.
Well let me know how you like Netflix (or any other internet entertainment provider) buffering while you are paying $ 11 a month to watch and tell me its great - it’s just about economics
Black ... first, given that Netflix is aligned with the failed former President, I cancelled that service. However, if I were still a Netflix subscriber, I’d want the restrictions on Netflix eliminated so that if other ISPs raised the prices, Netflix could come in and become an ISP so as to best serve their customers.
Again, you desperately need to take an introduction to economics. All of those artsy fartsy classes have left you ill prepared for the real world.
What the hell are you talking about ? Netflix aligns with OBama and that made you cancel their service ? That’s one conspiracy I must admit I missed.
This economics BS is just that. When only a couple idle companies control the internet that’s not good for consumers . Fuck this market BS . If you aren’t the CEO of ATT you should be enraged
There are only a couple companies controlling the internet because we had net neutrality it was too expensive for a small ISP to start up.
In capitalism if you don’t have the business model to be competitive you shouldn’t be successful but playing field rules didn’t favor the larger companies in that they couldn’t throttle the internet on who they favored now they can
BlackC I think you may not truly understand what changed with net neutrality. In 2015 the FCC took over instead of the FTC as Obama classified the ISPs as a class 2 company as AT&T was. This protected the ISPS from being sued by state AGs and the FTC which react much faster. By doing away with net neutrality it shifts back to the state AGs and FTC. This allows monitoring of the ISPs actions easier and suing them for unfair business practices as they did in 2012 with Comcast when they throtteled bittourent.
Black ... did Netflix just ink a deal to pay the Obama’s a boat load of money? The answer is ... they did. And if Netflix is going to pay the Obama’s a dime, I do t want it to be mine! No conspiracy theory on my part. A simple free choice to snot support a company that makes horrible business decisions.
By you clearly missed the point. If ISPs treat even Netflix poorly, I say they should have the right to provide their own services. That’s the way the free market works!
AJ ... I agree. The next step would be to completely eliminate all monopolies in the internet space.
The infrastructure costs would prohibit that option from typically non isp companies
Black ... not at all! The infrastructure is built. There is NO excuse to protect companies with monopoly status. It stifles competition and drives up the prices for consumers!
Anyone who promotes monopolies for the internet has no leg to stand on as they whine about costs and access!
Simply I do not one or two controlling the internet for any reason . The next step from this authoritarian regime would be to have Fox State Propaganda TV be the only thing found on the internet
Black ... you are such a drama queen! The key is that by getting the government out of the internet guarantees diversity of thought!
It was perfectly ok as was, without big companies in control.
Black ... thanks for confirming that you prefer that monopolies chosen by the government to have control over your internet rather than the free and open market.
No I think think you are not understanding what I am saying. Keep big companies from controlling the internet
Black ... by supporting monopolies, you’re enabling what you hate.
Again net neutrality is not supporting a monopoly aka neutral
Black ... that is delusional! Of course NN supports the status quo, including the monopolies!
Black ... it’s precious that you think that the misleading name has any connection with the truth! Psst, it doesn’t! It’s like creating a grotesque take over if insurance that is obscenely expensive and calling it the “Affordable Care Act. The name does not make it true!
Prior to Trumpniks change in the law , isps couldn’t slow down service from one person or company from another . Now they can manipulate the internet as they wish. Bad
Black ... if only you had a basic understanding of economics and history. Before the failure in chief, MrO used the unelected FCC to unilaterally implement his socialist policy of government control, how many ISPs had implemented your worst fear?
MrT has simply removed the shackles of capricious government control from the internet so that innovation can return. It’s clear that you love government control that stifles creativity instead of personal freedoms.
Black iyo why did/does the big providers support NN
You must be Trumpster rube as your response is as incoherent as Thinks and Trumpnik are. You leave anything to big companies and are reliant on their goodwill to consumers, history suggests otherwise. They will f you I. A heart beat . Ever hear of Wells Fargo, Lumber Liqidators, day loaners, etc etc etc
Black ...do you realize that when you accuse others of being “incoherent”, you really should do it in a coherent post.
I find myself defending the man alot, black. I would love to be on the hater side but the trueth of the matter is Trump is a peoples president.
WE share more in common with Trump then most US Presidents.
Public opinion of him is reactionary and without proper thought. As your statement
About me is as well.
When people conflate president trumps xenophobic nature to racism they are lying to themselves
That’s scary - you feel closest to a confirmed racist and pathological liar ? Better re-examine your values as you have sold your soul to con man Trumpnik and party .
Well Roberts comment start out iyo?
It will be a slow change, just like we were seeing in 2015 before the rules went in place.
It will start with one company throttling services that compete with them.
Reading the comments, the lack of understanding about Net Neutrality is astounding. People are against a boogeyman that never existed, not what Net Neutrality actually was.
Mine already have. Doubled the speed and the price went down $5/month.
... all this winning!
Should make it faster. I’m looking forward to it.
Said no one ever...it's a sad state of affairs if people have this kind of misunderstanding.
If you think the opposite, I’d say the same about you.
Removing NN won't make your internet faster. Extreme examples is "fast lanes" but the fast lane would be the current speed...
The only way to drive speed is to increase competition, which removing NN will not do.
No, removing regs won’t make the internet faster. But, it will create competition.
It will absolutely not create competition. In fact AT&T is trying to merge with Time Warner and Comcast is looking to get even bigger by merging with Fox.
The formation of oligopolies is a separate issue, though one our government may have to address eventually. Of course, the current mergers may be, in part, due to NN. But, that’s besides the point. Removing NN will create competition for speed, which is the way it should be. I don’t need as much bandwidth as Netflix, Hulu, or Spotify. Let them pay more for fast lanes so that I can have faster, more reliable streaming again.
Dik ... its a hoot that you think NN wasn’t already encouraging the monopolies. Deregulation — including the elimination of monopolies — is THE solution to better internet services.
ISPs will wait a short time so that people can proclaim how great it is that NN has been repealed and how it clearly wasn’t needed in the first place before slowly increasing prices once they aren’t being as closely scrutinized.
No. Internet existed for a few decades with no problem. NetNut existed for about a year. No difference when it went into effect, there will still be no difference with it gone again. The only difference is the potential control the government can take over our speech. MUCH more free without it.
The early stages of the internet are in no way comparable to what it is today. Also, there have been regulations and cases won against ISPs since the very early 2000s, just no broad federal regulation like NN was.
The principle of NN existed since the inception of the internet. The 2015 rules were put in place because companies started violating it and the FCC had no teeth to enforce it.
No. Marxism for the internet was completely unnecessary. Just like Marxism itself.
Every single person who said yes is not only lying, uneducated, miseducated, or emotional, but they will be proven to be outright delusional in the coming months.
You guys are talking patent falsehoods either out of ignorance or genuinely irrational fear. I can’t tell which is worse.
My internet is just like it was before they established the rules in April 2015.
I’m paying five figures a month to access Google search which returns a hundred ad results followed by an unrelevant search result. Bring net neutrality back. The internet was hell and impossible to use before 2015.
my internet immediately became unbearable slow, causing me to have to use mobile data just to access a blank Google search page. COMPLETE BS. EFFING GREEDY MONEY HOARDING A******S.
Switch companies, that's the beauty of the free market system. And why the market will stabilize. If you don't like one brand of something, switch to a different and if enough people switch then the first company either changes for the better or dies.
I can’t even access the internet anymore. True story
Posted this via pony express? Or, let me guess, telegram. "Can't access the internet: stop. True story: stop" . 😁
The FCC can only remove its own protections. I’m pretty sure Net neutrality still has to be revoked by congress
No, NN was a FCC rule that has now been repealed. Congress has the ability to vote to reverse the rule change within a certain number of days or pass their own NN law.
Thought we were all gonna die?
The only way for innovation is through competition.
You can’t compete with utilities
There is and always has been only one option for high speed internet in my area. Not only am I paying an outrageous price but now the cable co is able to block and slow sites at their discretion...
BRING ON THE COMPETITION!!
Goes back to the question, should internet be considered a utility.
Not even gonna effect is this has only been a thing since 2012. It really has no impact on us just competitors and big corporations
April 2015. Not 2012
I’m hoping that competition will drive prices down for higher speeds.
What do you think will actually happen?
I’m thinking new plans for low users and professional users that cost more. But they have that now, so I don’t know.
What do you think will happen? Probably nothing. Just like it was a few years ago. Same as yesterday too.
I hope nothing happens. But, I think greed is powerful. Thankfully, for the most part I'm not a heavy user. But, I do use several different apps, and I like to enjoy unfettered access when I use them. So I acknowledge their greed, and mix it with skepticism of the unknown, and I don't like how it adds up.
What did they change from a few years ago when net neutrality was started? Did you see a change?
My bill has been the same for 10 years
Admittedly, I didn't have much personal experience before. Bought my first smartphone or cellphone for that matter in 2011. I think unlimited plans were scarce, or very expensive when I started. Now they are widely available, and somewhat more affordable depending on your provider.
Unfortunately there is no competition with internet providers in many areas.
Auughhhh no the end of the internet! Aaaaa the end of the world!
If u dont use a lots of bandwidth you will will pay less accordingly and if u use lots u will pay more accordingly. As it should be.
I remember polls about net neutrality showed overwhelming percentages of both Democrats and Republicans supporting it. What changed so many Republicans to now support the change?
I think they realized that we didn’t need it. We get a discount if we don’t need to download much.
Have you received a discount?
Wrong tense. Do you actually anticipate a discount?
Lol. I’m hoping. Probably not though.
For one, this app is not nearly representative of the general population. Also, it's about the framing of the question because this shows one "team" made a change and we are in the age of team sport politics. If you ask people if they support net neutrality without any partisan verbiage, the results change.
That’s interesting. I’m sure that you’re right. Which way does it go?
Did they change dramatically after they went into effect?
They just went into effect today...
Prepare yourself, it’s coming unless your State steps in.
And no matter how bad it gets for the consumer conservatives will vehemently defend it.
Obama should have rolled it back, then they would support it
I know. The worst thing for net neutrality is that Obama came out in favor of it. Automatically made all the conservatives against it.
I was for Obama fixing college football. Let them play he said during the election. He never did. I got ripped off.
“Prepare yourself, it’s coming unless your State steps in.”
Probably the best statement to symbolize the liberal mindset.
I know my governor signed some bill into law keeping Net neutrality in WA. So things I think will stay the same in my community. Elsewhere in the USA...idk. I don’t honestly know enough about the subject. I remember how the internet was before and after NN...and my life and internet experience is the same.
