Do you think that people that immerse themselves daily in an echo chamber of like opinions can actually think for themselves?

We are all in a chamber to some extent. Some of those that fully immerse themselves can think for themselves they just choose not to.

Nah. It’s easier to just do and say what dear leader trump wants us to do and say.

Actually, in my opinion there are a majority of Republicans that don't just agree with whatever Trump says. They say when they think he fucked up and when he did a good job. What people can't accept is that people think he did more good than bad

Actually you’re probably right. I think I spend way too much time on here and Facebook.

No. That’s why your only sources of information cannot be the main stream media and late night talk shows.

Reading below, it appears that you are calling SOH an echo chamber. One of the things I like about SoH is all the differing view points.

I don’t remember saying that. I think someone else did. I don’t generally think that about SoH. There may be aspects of it here, especially when people block others, but it isn’t anywhere near as bad as some other platforms.

They can but it's really hard to poke through those onion layers. Its important to not let yourself become one of those people. Be open to new ideas and perspectives. Be willing to listen rather than talk.

Yes, but without criticism critical thinking goes out the window.

Nope. Then they like to hit and run you with an insult, block you, and then bitch to all their like minded pals about how you bullied them. ❄️

By the way, I feel the same about you and @voc.

Thanks KS and let’s point out for the viewers that we had issues but found a greater respect for one another in our ability to have good conversation. That’s important to me.

Absolutely! People can find common ground if they talk and listen to one another instead of talking at each other. I’m still guilty of it sometimes myself when others are just dismissive.

Simply because you choose not to see your contribution to the "echo" chamber.....

Yes I understand that your first reaction is to attack me. I’m not perfect and I make mistakes. But I absolutely do not consciously contribute to an echo chamber. And I continuously challenge myself and my own opinions on everything. Is that what you needed to hear to consider the question now instead of focusing in on me?

Sentinel Ya ie wa noh
06/07/18 12:57 pm

But no less contribute whether consciencely or not.....if I were to "attack" you .....there would be no doubt or mistake it was an attack.....

benseth 11,780 votes

Okay how about you disregard the word “attack” and replace it with the other words I used, “focusing on me”? What’s your excuse for just focusing on me instead of the question as a whole? Is it that you think for yourself and I do not? Or is it, like I said, that you just have to see that I’m not perfect before you can acknowledge that you aren’t either?

News organizations are too polarized. Echo chambers are hard to avoid at this point.

SOH is an echo chamber, and I’ve seen little evidence that many SOHers are independent thinkers.

I would say somewhat. As far as SOH the echo chamber are the same polls overrun and over. You can tell the political slant of the pollsters. The answer and debate the same. On the flip side you do get different inputs and most SOHers are doing their research. So I would say they are more informed than most and half of them right.

I would agree for the most part

So you’re saying you’ve already heard it all and know exactly someone’s political ideology from the questions they ask, common? No wonder your opinions are so fixed and no one else is right.

TheUbermensch
06/07/18 10:55 am

No but from some that have insults to one group you can tell and there are some recurring radicals

Honestly one of the main reasons I’m here is to observe an echo chamber, although in my case it’s more of a noise cancellation room.

I don't think I have an echo chamber. Thoughts?

I was asking common, who apparently can pick out ALL political slants, whether there is one or not.

LeftLibertarian The Age of Outrage

I wouldn’t say it’s particularly applicable to you, but then again you’re kind of an outlier cause you use this app in a different way than most, to post polls with interesting questions, propositions, and meaningful answers.

TheUbermensch
06/07/18 11:04 am

I appreciate the feedback. I have seen extremely radical polls that baffled me.

commonman1 Peace
06/07/18 11:08 am

Benseth that’s because I’m so freakin great. But if most of the time you can’t read a poll and tell if it’s a liberal slanted poll or a conservative slanted poll, come ask me and I’ll tell you. That is most of the time. I’m there for you.

TheUbermensch
06/07/18 11:09 am

Common that seems a bit ridiculous

I asked a round of ridiculously worded polls when I came back from a year long break because of my being upset over certain policy decisions. But I have since fallen back into asking rational questions. I’m a nonpartisan moderate. I don’t ask any question with intent to represent any “side”. I might ask them with intent to represent criticism of the president but that should be in bounds.

Yeah it is ridiculous. Obviously this person has no idea or they wouldn’t have so much bravado.

benseth 11,780 votes

And it’s absolutely ridiculous to speak to the slant only instead of addressing the question in a meaningful way.

commonman1 Peace
06/07/18 11:17 am

You can look at my polls all you want. The vast majority of them are not slanted. I’ve learned those types of polls aren’t conducive to productive conversation. But I am frisky at times.

I feel that opposition to some of these actions that trump has taken is actually upholding ideas and ideals of the RIGHT.

And I don’t always espouse ANY side of a question. I’m asking the question apart from the question to understand the opinions given, not to just agree with people that agree with me...

But I seem to need to make this type of disclaimer EVERY TIME before I can get some people to engage with the actual question.
