The video game "Active Shooter", where you play as a school shooter, has been pulled from steam after intense criticism. Should this be protected under free speech, or banned as a clear call to violence?

It already is, but I get your drift. If the Devs have their own website, they don't need Steam...they'll get more sales off this free publicity than they ever would have otherwise, and more power to 'em.

Case in point, I've never heard of it, it ain't really my thing, but I'll buy it and play it, and maybe leave it a good review, if it's any good.

It sounds like inciting violence to me.

Honestly there's much worse on Steam. This one just so happened to make headlines. Steam doesn't care otherwise.

If this game were to be banned because of the danger of inciting more violence, wouldn’t that be an indictment of all violent video games? Wouldn’t you have to ban ALL video games that depict violence for the same reason?
I don’t agree with banning video games for any reason as long as it age restricted, but this logic follows.

Since this issue has exactly NOTHING to do with anyone's right to free speech, I picked the other choice.

Protected, but wow how bad of an idea is this. I hope the game tanks big time

I have literally been sitting on this idea as a video game sense Columbine. I went as far as building my high school in udk.

This is a great idea and it is definitely art I would actually have to see the content of the video game to decide whether or not it is a call to action - but I highly doubt that and it should be covered by free speech.

This game also has a mode where you can play as the police force in an active shooter situation, and they are planning on adding a hostage mode too.

I totally get free speech, but games depicting kids being killed in very stupid. Also not even GTA 5 allows this in their games.

I’m all for free speech but that game should never have been created. It was in very bad taste.

It should be banned by Steam, not the government. Also every video game retailer should refuse to carry it. Maybe a few porn shops would stoop that low but everyone else should pull it or join my boycott list.

I tend to agree with this idea.

I am against banning anything like this but I have no problem with retailers refusing to carry it.

Actually, the more I think about it the more I think this is basically terrorist training materials and should be treated as such. Everyone involved in writing or selling this game should be tried for distribution of terrorist training materials.

The reason I changed my answer on this one but don’t feel the same way about a game like GTA is just thinking about what this active shooter game is likely to be: go into a school full of defenseless kids and shoot as many as you can while looking out for police and security officers. That would probably be at least ok training for the real thing and I don’t want that crap on store shelves or an easy download.

So how do you think it should be handled Nemacyst? I assume we both have the same goal of reducing shootings of all types while placing the fewest limits on free speech possible. That first like on your above post was from me btw.

I don’t disagree with any of that other than this game being a rather obvious training tool. But it truly amazes me that such a large number of people think all teachers should be disarmed, even the ones with police or military training.

Neither. Steam should remove it because it is inappropriate but banning it would require government intervention and they should not do that.

I think this is the first time all 3 of us actually all agree on something.

Is it in bad taste? Of course. Should it be banned by the government? Unless it literally says "Go and do likewise", no as it isn't technically promoting anymore violence than MW2 which had a mass shooting scene in an airport. Should steam pull it down? That's up to them and I likely would if I were them as its bad PR

Pretty much all video games are violent.

GTA is much worse than this.

That being said, the game is in poor taste but shouldn’t be banned.

I wouldn’t say GTA is much worse than this. Sure, they have a larger quantity of questionable content, but you’re never able to kill children, are you? Let alone a school shooting.

Zach21 California
05/30/18 9:00 am

In terms of content alone, GTA is more violent, in my opinion. It’s a fun game, I’ve played it, but there’s a wider variety of guns and ways to kill civilians and cops.

I haven’t actually played the school shooter game, but from what I’ve read, players can choose between being the shooter or stopping the shooter.

Zach21 California
05/30/18 9:02 am

That being said, the overall objective of GTA isn’t to kill as many civilians and cops as possible, while the objective in the school shooter game is just that.

In that sense, it is worse.

I wouldn't say all games are violent but I have played my fair share of them. That being said I agree that the point of GTA isn't to slaughter innocents. There was a game kind of like that called Hatred a while ago that people simply looked down on but wasn't actually removed from steam.

Xemanis Neutral Good
05/30/18 10:48 am

I think steam Shouldn't carry it but that's the extent of it.

Xemanis Neutral Good
05/30/18 10:50 am

That is the game about killing kids, not hatred. Though I'm pretty sure Hatred was simply made for shock value

ctskapski NB MD

The game should be legally protected.

That doesn't mean steam should have to sell it.
Steam should be able not to sell it, if they disagree with it.

They don't sell porn games (officially) for that reason, but porn is still protected (unless it involves illegal content.)

The free speech that is the game should be protected, but Steam has the right to not sell the game on their platform.

Your protection of free speech has to do government censorship. Steam is well within their right to say we will not provide a platform for this "speech".

It’s freedom of speech. The absurd backlash against this game reminds me of the prudes who blamed video games for Columbine & Virginia Tech. It’s a distraction from real solutions to the problem at hand.

Ok yes. But did you look at the article. The game literally has you playing as a school shooter. The goal is to kill as many cops and civilians as possible. The creator had scammed people out of money before.

05/30/18 8:06 am

What’s wrong with killing cops?

gluxford1 Arizona
05/30/18 8:08 am

Bower, lots of games involve violence similar to that. It doesn’t mean that they’re advocating for it nor does it mean that they should be banned. Artistic expression should not be censored, even if that expression is controversial.

Zach21 California
05/30/18 8:42 am

In GTA you have the freedom to run over civilians with cars, beat them to death, kill cops with rocket launchers, etc.

What’s the difference with this game? Except for the fact that you have the option to be a SWAT member and actually stop the shooter.

It’s a terrible game, but an overreaction by many people considering what other games are out there.

gluxford1 Arizona
05/30/18 9:26 am

The difference is that it’s just that. A game. Nothing more and nothing less. We should be spending less time talking about a
video game and more time talking about how to combat the problem of actual mass shootings. Banning an offensive video game isn’t going to solve anything.
