The two are on two different sides of the same fence, and they were both socially reprimanded, which ruined their careers. That’s not what I’m saying. I simply believe that the best form of dealing with ideological dispute is through debate, even if the other ideology is the worst imaginable. Firing her in response just crushes the possibility of conversation, and it is simply not justified. Her job is to act, not having the correct viewpoints. I personally disagree with her view, but I think she should have the ability to say it.

She does have the ability to say whatever she wants. She was never silenced. Most employers consider you an extension of their company and sometimes you can be a liability.

I understand that the company has the incentive to fire someone over this type of comment, but that doesn’t mean that they should. If anyone disagrees with her perspective, they should have a rational conversation with her. Having a false or harmful view can be very bad, and firing someone for having a bad view only makes the situation worse. Haven’t you seen the ramblings of white supremacists? They often believe that they are the oppressed ones, and that radical change is necessary. Actions like this prove their views in their eyes. So if you believe that her statement truly was racist, then the company’s actions should be terrible in your view. Calm and careful reasoning with the party in question would not produce nearly as much harm, if any. Radical action like this is not moral, even if it is good for the company’s image.

And yes, if her statements caused her to be fired then she is clearly not allowed by the company to say certain things.

You are absolutely incorrect on that. First amendment applies to the government. The government hasn’t silenced her. And to that extent, to take away her 1a rights would essentially be not allowing her any public forum. You may say what you want but you are not protected from the consequences of your speech.

I’m not arguing that she is protected by the first amendment. I’m saying that she shouldn’t be fired over a political statement, albeit one that I disagree with. The company shouldn’t have fired her over statements like that, as it discourages free discussion. That free discussion would be the best path towards reducing apparently hateful speech in the future.
