Read an interesting forum where a few people argued that the primary objective of the Western Allies in WW2 in mid44-45 was not entirely to defeat Germany, but to try to limit the gains of the USSR, to push the Iron Curtain as east as possible.
It took the US almost 3 years from entering the war to launching an invasion of Europe. They were waiting it out for Germany and Russia to beat themselves. They only invaded when they did because Russia realized this, stoppedarching towards Berlin and instead pulled a U-turn and started grabbing up as much land in East Europe as they could
No, that was Churchill's objective without a doubt, but FDR was never onboard with that strategy. That's why we landed at Normandy, rather than the Balkans.
They weren't sympathizers. Some historians believe the whole reason we dropped the bomb on Japan was as a show of force to Russia as Japan was in already in the process of surrendering to the soviets.
We did however launch a big propoganda campign to make the soviets looks better than they were even helping to cover up some mass killings just so we could continue to use them as an ally
If you look at my other post that's not really true unless you're just trying to use an excuse to make this a partisan issue... We were trying to have the russians and Germans kill themselves and solve both problems for us
What the Russians did, didn't hold a candle to what the Germans did in just a few short years.. look at what Churchill did in India during WW2 by starving out millions to death... Gotta pick your battles and defeat the greater evils.
That's a realistic possibility. But they also halted the advance to Berlin after the Battle of the bulge so the Soviets could win the race to avoid open conflict with the Red army.
