I mentioned this the other day in answer to someone who mentioned “Ugly Americans” when describing Americans overseas. I said that I believed this use was passé shortly after Vietnam.
When I travel, and I travel a lot, it’s my sense that the “Ugly American” mantle has been overtaken by Ugly Europeans. Due to 9/11 and other world events since Nam, most Americans I see are low key, at least those over 20 years old.

Considering “Ugly Americans” was the only option in that poll that was against their actions, it’s not fair to say that’s what everybody would call them. There’s no reason to associate their nationality with it at all. If there were unbiased poll options, I would say their actions are not ok/annoying, not call them ugly Americans

I missed your last poll.....but I have an observation. I’ve traveled abroad and the ‘ugly American’ stereotype exists for a reason. It’s certainly a minority of people.....but it happens enough to create the perception. For my part, I go out of the way to be courteous, generous & respectful of local customs when I travel. Anecdotes aside.....how would one stereotype an ‘ugly mexican’ tourist....because I’ve never seen it.
