True and I’ve just never understood how that happened. I assume tower systems were not very good way back then.

I’m not sure they had any surface movement radar at all back then, but if I remember correctly it was a pilot-caused thing that could happen again, and that there were some language problems that were inexcusable even then. Complacency in an area of very light traffic. The procedural changes that inevitably follow accidents caused by these kinds of human factors make them less likely, but don’t eliminate the possibility entirely. The unbelievable unreliability of the human in a system is the best argument for automation, but as long as it is the human doing the programming, it is also the best argument against automation.

You are absolutely correct but either are some car “accidents” that are deemed accidents. I was just searching for clarification.
