The smallest minority is the individual, not racial groups. Favoring race and gender is still racist/sexist. I believe colleges should totally erase race as a factor, and examine purely that person and their achievements.

This actually hurts minorities. Typical liberal do good policies designed to make Libs feel better about their generosity. Thomas Sowell wrote an excellent book about affirmative action World Wide and it's shortcomings & disastrous consequences. High standards help everyone.

The person writing the question is very stupid and understands nothing about the law. The case, is whether diversity is to the interest of the campus. Diversity does not just mean ethnicity, it means factoring in every human variable. The people who oppose this are just stupid and selfish.

As a white college freshman who had to go through the college admission process recently, this is a no brainer. I busted my butt to get into college, I shouldn't be viewed differently than someone of a different race. We're all students! Jeez!

@soulfighter, correction: affirmative action is about fucking over anyone who's not a minority or a woman, in the name of 'fairness'. In this day and age, any single person has every bit as much opportunity as anyone else to succeed. "All men are self-made, only the successful admit it."

No. Fuck that. I had to get into college on the basis of my grades and work ethic. Why the hell should we let someone else in just because they're white, or black, or asian, or mexican? If you don't have the grades or work ethic, your ass gets to work retail and restaurants. Tough shit.

Sure B.D., as long as any money made by someone's grandparents can no longer be inherited past their own grandchildren and rather is put into national bank. The detrimental action of slavery and Jim crow extends far past slaves; you realize it was less than 50 years ago MLK was murdered right?

Misleading question? Schools are not allowed to favor on minorities, but all things relatively equal are allowed to use it as a diversification piece.

I have a good friend who hires people at a large manufacturing plant....they are forced to hire unqualified people because of a required level of diversity....so they hire minorities who do not have the proper training/education for these jobs over and over again. The minorities realize this and...

I believe minorities should be entitled to fiscal affirmative action. Not biased acceptance rates solely formed out of their own skin color.

@lisalashe: In 2007, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote, "The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race." Achievement is equal opportunity. Try hard, or try harder. Giving someone extra credit based on race, merely "offsets" the discrimination.

For educational purposes, the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation did not magically erase racism, nor the LASTING, DETRIMENTAL effects it had on a downtrodden, beaten down (literally) group of people. That's for those who say black people should just "get over it". Yeah, it's that easy!

I think a majority of people leaving comments don't understand what affirmative action is. It's deeper than the color of skin. It's about historical injustices, history, economics, policies, etc. it's more complex take a few days to truly understand it THEN leave a comment.

More than race, colleges should look at the educational levels of the parents. Lots of minorities are inherently disadvantaged, but of course there may be white people that may fall into this category as well.

In addition that girl was not in top 10%. She didn't make the academic cut & bcause of her self righteous up bringing she cried wolf. Does anyone know the huge numbers of young ppl turned down due to racism who are IN TOP 10%?! Look it up and be honest the laws are needed.

There is so much racism in America there has to be laws to strengthen the underrepresented in this Country. Laws help defeat the power hungry immigrants from europe who are themselves a minority.

This question is poorly written and curves the vote in a certain way. Do I have to remind people the over 350 years of affirmative action policies for white males? That's a fact. It's like starting a race then half way u let "other" people start. Think about it?

Skin color doesn't affect ability in any way, so it should not come into play with college acceptance. Now, for financial aid race can POSSIBLY be a factor, but only because certain minorities tend (not always) to be poorer than others, and so it would really depend on financial situation, not race.

@Lisalashe you're a moron quite spamming that question why would any one give up a year of their life.... Why would you ever want to be some one else you dumbass even if they had more money you would not have you're family or friends any more

Oh now ALL minorities are on welfare, commit violent crimes, and are lazy?? By golly I think I time-warped back to the 60s. Are you going to say minorities need their own schools and businesses too??

I agree! However, this case is nothing about race and I believe Ms. Fisher is going to lose. The state of Texas does not allow admission based on race. It is based on being in the top 10% of the graduating class. Simple as that. She's just a little salty she didn't get into her first choice college
