Would the U.S. military still be able to adequately defend the nation if it were half its current size?

America enjoys its freedoms because of brave Americans who have died and bled in the battlefield, if you lower the size of military watch our enemies take advantage. You need a congress and leadership with Military experience to know that

Our power is always relative to the other powers like russia and china. I think if we stop looking at them and they grow in size then that would be threatening.

Before WW2 we had pearl harbor. Before iraq we had 911. both tomes we went from being vulnerable to being apex predator. So yes well be fine without preemptive buildup.

It's immoral for a country to spend more or war than it does on taking care of the needs of its citizens. We could cut the military budget in half and still have room to spare. Unfortunately we've allowed military spending to become such a major component of our economy that we're addicted to it.

That's simply not true. Military spending is about 1/4 of the budget. Most of the rest is social spending.

It's irresponsible for someone to comment on this issue when they think we spend more on defense than on social welfare.

03/13/13 11:02 pm

I said no. Even when we stop playing world police, we'll still have a lot of people gunning for us. Personally, I'd like to see an increase in Guard/Reserve strength and a decrease in active strength. Revive the citizen-soldier concept that America's military was built on.

patton73
03/16/13 1:22 pm

I agree completely.. Our enemies come from us sticking our nose in stuff for America's personal gain and that is not right.

The citizen soldier idea is how America was made and if we re-employ that idea we can more influence our steady ride to socialism/fascism.

Considering how the war on terror is lasting more than ten years, I don't think we should cut defense. That is the LAST place the government should cut. We need to be able to readily defend ourselves and help our allies.

That philosophy is fine and dandy for a country that has money to spend. Our country is in massive debt. Having excess of something should be the last thing on our mind.

And we could cut the spending for this "stick" in half and still be spending more than twice as much as anyone else.

You can have extensive knowledge on just about anything, but never become directly involved in it, which is where true knowledge comes from. There's always more to the "story" that's behind the scenes.

Kind of the Iron Dome on steroids. If no plane, ship, or missile could get within 500 miles of our shores without our say so, then Canada and Mexico would be the only routes of invasion. And we'd still see that coming long before an invasion.

That's called reducing the defense budget, which IS happening. However, cutting the military by 50% will not allow us to fight one war effectively.

beamsf15 Boise, ID
03/12/13 10:28 pm

Btw, when fighting a war (ie defending our country AND it's strategic objectives), having a military equal to the other guys' will result in more casualties...overwhelming power will 1) deter others from wanting to pick a fight, and 2) ensure a quick end and reduce overall casualties on all sides.

pinkyusuck The Carribean. I wish.
03/13/13 3:36 am

We need a military capable of fighting two wars at once because we have enemies (or at least, not friendly nations) on both coasts. China and Russia to the West and most of the Middle East (and Russia) to the East. What happens if they attack both coasts simultaneously? Not good.
