Like Sudoku, but prefer Kakuro or KenKen!

you start with a 9x9 grid, divided into 9 3x3 grids with some numbers in it. your goal is to fill out the rest of the 9x9 grid with numbers so that each row, column, and 3x3 has the every number 1-9, with no repeats.

I like both. However, I don't like crosswords that require a thesaurus or dictionary. I'm better at math so if I have to choose between a 7-letter word for married or where a number goes in a pattern, I'll take the number.

When I was about to check the results, I expected a large Republican margin in favor of crosswords considering Sudoku is a Japanese puzzle activity, and therefore might be considered "un-american".

I was doing Sudoku YEARS AND YEARS ago under the name "Cross Sum" in an American math magazine. It has been credited with being Japanese b/c that's when it gained popularity, but it's been around America much longer.

Sorry... Not called "Cross Sums."--that's now Kakuro. They were called "Number Place." I guess I shouldn't comment in the middle of the night; my brain quits working! LOL

Crossword!! And I fill them in with a pen with rarely a write-over!! I've never been very good with numbers and sudoku just freaks me out looking at it. I've tried it but it wasn't any fun. Crosswords are total fun for me!! English/languages are more my thing than numbers.

I don't mind English, but there's no synonyms for 1-9, so sudoku involves less muddling. Therefore it has my preference as well

Sudoku isn't math, it's logic using numbers.

bop
03/05/13 12:51 pm

I would argue that logic using numbers IS math, at its basest level :) whether or not it is sophisticated, logic and reasoning using numbers is key in all forms of math, so it would probably fall into that category, while logic and reasoning with words would be more English oriented

Soduko does not have anything to do with math, even though it uses numbers. It is strictly logic. It would be the same idea, if the puzzle used the letters A through I or nine different objects, for example. In fact, I have seen Soduko puzzles that do just that.

You just put numbers in random boxes and pray.

EmWalt Meet Jim the Duck
03/05/13 6:52 am

You have to have the numbers 1-9 in each box, down each column, and across each row. There can't be two of any number in any given row, column, or three by three box. Each row/column and box should have numbers that add up to 45.

GrandmaALiCE For a better 2021
03/05/13 7:02 am

Emwait, you don't have to worry about adding the numbers up. You just have to make sure you have all numbers, 1 through 9.

I have never done, or considered doing, Sudoku. I think I am, by nature, more a 'word person', and generally do very well on crossword puzzles, and other word-type games. I've been trying to get my friends to join Words With Friends, but they all tell me if I'm doing it, they won't join! :D
