Can you identify more bird species by sight, or more plant species?
Plants by common name
All birds are edible. Not all plants are. Ergo, survival instincts encourage plant knowledge over bird knowledge.
I used to work at a nursery, so I choose plants for sure.
Neither. When I see a bird or a plant I have no idea what the hell I'm looking at but maybe I know birds better idk.
@xtina : there are more than 300k plant species and only 10k bird (about 1k US) but I went with birds because I estimate I can name about 200 from US and 100 more from central Europe (though I don't keep a sighting checklist) but doubt I can name 300 common plants.
None lol suck
My mom used to own a florist, so I went with plants.
I was thinking of plants in their natural environments/forms (e.g. recognizing carrots by the leafy tops) and still chose plants. When I realized that ANY state of growth was included, my answer was definitely plants! Couldn't *everyone* name more fruits and veggies than birds?!??
that was tough im pretty equally unskilled in both
lindyj23 Chicken, turkey, duck, goose, pheasant, grouse, chukar, quail, and emu (jerky). I can't think of any more tasty ones right now - I'm not as hungry as I was earlier.
VAtech- I agree. When I posted that, I hadn't seen all the other "firsts" of his.
Dear starry, although I found you amusing at first, this app is about getting peoples opinions. I should not have egged you on.
I picked birds. I know quite a few plants but I actually go birding so that puts it over the top.
Earlybird, you are probably one of the very few fans of Starry! No one likes the obnoxious and in this case extremely over the top "firsters"
I'm a hobby birder though I cannot identify every LBJ (little brown job, nondescript warbler or wren) . Plants are those green leafy things along the road, right? ;)
the only bird I can recognize is a parrot... I know a few more plants
I guess plants. Not too good with either, really.
@zod Just wondering what birds you eat. More than 4?! I only eat chicken and turkey typically. Have had duck but not very often.
Think of all the vegetables, fruits and beans out there.
uhhh, that question doesn't make any sense.
my dad is a bird watcher so naturally I have an interest in bird watching. I can identify every bird in my area. I find spotting birds (new or old) more exciting than plants.
There are clearly more species of plants than birds, but the question is can I identify them. It's lunchtime. I can name more tasty birds than vegetables I like, but it's easier to do it the other way around. Corn, tomato, potato, Lima bean, done. Other than corn, I probably can't identify these.
Starry seriously makes me lol!
I love trees and plants! I know more about them than birds.
@notquitewhite: I can't understand the opposite. Birds are many different colors, if you can't identify THAT, then hmm...
Between fruits, vegetables and flowers, I can't imagine anyone not knowing more plants than birds.
Pigeon...pigeon...pigeon...seagull...pigeon...pigeon...falcon...pigeon...pigeon...pigeon being eaten by falcon...pigeon...pigeon...
But, birds all the way. In the grandparents question I said my grandmother taught me about birds. She had a birders book, it's now mine.
I still remember the time I was out rowing and this huge, majestic bald eagle swooped down out of the forest over the water. The experience was more worth a MILLION words.
I know plants better. Plants like blueberry kush, bob marley sativa, trainwreck, northern lights, afghani kush etc
I know more plant species from my time in the military but also know y fair share of birds.
birds but not by much..I have no idea when it comes to flowers..I cannot tell the difference between some flowers and weeds
I'll guess birds, but it could be about even. I know a lot about true trees and what plants are edible in the northwest forests, but deciduous trees all look the same to me - especially for the half of the year they look dead. Other than lawn, what other plants are there?
There are like 200 times more plants than birds
I don't know hardly any birds, but I can recognize bunches and bunches of plants.
I think it's a good 50 50 for me.
I know quite of few of both.
Plants, but only because of vegetables.
I know a few birds by sight but I know my plants better.
When I was ten I shocked my parents by identifying twenty different birds by their Latin genus/species names :D Birds definitely
I took botany classes in college but I've never taken a bird class. LOL I recognize a few birds but far, far more plants!!!
I could spot a cannabis plant from a mile away.
I think "no" is the appropriate answer to this poll question.
There must be more ornithologists than I realized. I would think the average person could list far more fruits veggies trees grasses & flowers than fowl.
By numbers, plants. But by % of those in my environs , birds. Went with birds because I like birds! I even live with one, a sun conure.
You republicans really like your birds :)
