Are there more than 2 genders?
As much as I hate to say it, you can have as many genders as you want, it is whatever you identify as. Sex is typically only reserved for two: Male or Female. Unless of course you fall into that extreme minority.
Nice to see someone else who understands the difference.
I was looking at a bunch of geese and read it as ganders.
I think people have gotten too carried away with this question these days. What's wrong with being a tomboy or a guy in touch with his feminine side? Does it really need all this special attention of needing a new "gender identity"? If that's the case, where will this end if each group needs their own "gender identity" category to fit into? Why can't we just appreciate our differences/diversity within the two genders vs be divisive and end up with everyone in their own unique category?
Sure, why not. Gender is a social term not a scientific one.
No. Gender is determined by chromosomes .
So what is a person with XX and XY on the 46 chromosome? A person with both sets of genitalia or a mixture of both.
Intersex ppl could pick one of the 2 sexes to be.
Intersex is a birth defect not a third sex.
Prince: Sex and gender are the same thing.
There really are more than 2! I wasn’t aware of this a few years ago, but “girl” and “boy” aren’t the only genders in existence. Examples of these include Indian Hijra, Native American Two-Spirits, etc.
Also, gender =/= sex assigned at birth (the former is social/cultural, the latter physical), and intersex people exist.
List of the five genders:
3. Grilled Cheese Sandwich
4. Wal-Mart Toaster
5. Attack Helicopter
Nope, just two
Of course not. There are 2 sexes, and gender is just another word for sex.
The number of sexes is two.
The number of genders is whatever.
There’s two genders. The rest of it is just a way for attention starved people to be unique.
Science says no. Don’t be an ignorant science denier.
No, unless you count “delusional” as a third gender.
There is a possible third biological sex though. Some babies are born "intersex" (hermaphrodism). It's rare and usually quickly decided which equipment is more developed and corrected.
It’s too rare to be considered a “third sex.” It’s just a rare mutation.
Aside from that rare quirk, I agree there are two biological sexes in humans.
I also claim that "gender" is a cultural construct that has no basis in biological reality. You are what you are born as, deal with it.
'I also claim that "gender" is a cultural construct that has no basis in biological reality.'
That's not a claim, Praet, that's scientific fact. Sex *is* biology, and can't change. Gender *is* anthropology, it's the cultural roles and ideas people and societies ascribe to sex. This is why my stance in this never ending debate of stupidity, ignorance, and assholery is that 'There are as many genders as your culture says there are'.
Traditional Amero-European cultures have two genders, with masculine and feminine behaviors clearly defined and separated. India has three/four. Men, Women, Hirja, Sadhin. Thailand has their famous Ladyboys. The Xanith of Oman practice indeterminate gender.
People have different cultures, get over it Tlaney.
The Prince is correct, nonbinary genders have existed forever.
This idea that gender is a cultural construct apart from sex is a new one. It’s a semantic game. If you want to redefine words go ahead; I’ll redefine $1 to be $1,000,000 then by definition be a millionaire. It doesn’t change reality.
No they haven't. I don't wanna herar about 50 million genders and how everything's a social construct from king faggot. Sorry, not sorry. You are a boy or a girl, nothing in between or outside that's it. Your pseudo scientific Marxism is not only concerning but one of the final steps in destroying everything we believe in and embracing nihilism. Disgusting
If I am a king than you need to, as the ignorant baseborn pleb that you are, give deference to your betters and those who know what the fuck they are speaking of. The dichotomy between the hard scientific definition of sex and the cultural one of gender has been fact within academia for decades now. It is only the moronic public that refuses to accept the truth...that's culture as well. It is a semantic difference, but one that is *key* because it carries scientific weight and procedural differences.
They are different things. Get over it. Believe that there are two genders, I don't care, but stop denying science you morons.
I wish people would stop using "semantics" as if it were a bad thing. I'm trying to clarify a definition that is not so clear in people's minds, not redefine it, just like I recently did by pointing out the definition of pedophilia.
First, FP, there is no need to be rude.
Second, praet, you are indeed redefining gender if you make it a psychosocial construct.
Just because you wish you were a different gender doesn't make it so.
Yes, yes it does. You can't say the same for sex though. Sex is genetic.
I think I recall that gender was only a grammatical term. Some languages have three genders, neutral being the third, notably Greek, German and Russian.
Correct, Praet, and you can add Latin...
...and English. We have masculine and feminine for people and animals, and neuter for inanimate objects. (He/She, It)
Yes other more antiquated cultures tend to believe lunacy.
Sex and gender are the same thing.
Science and Academia say otherwise dumbass. You're belief that sex and gender are the same is literally derived from your cultural outlook.
Science has plenty to say about being male and female. And it has nothing to do with preference. Again, the idea that gender means something other than biological sex is a recent invention.
Genetically, gender and sex and determined by separate genes
And as has been proven in this poll, it's not a new invention. It's only new to western countries.
There are no “genes” that determine gender apart from sex chromosomes. Talk about a myth.
Codified as a scientific term, yes. Cultural definitions of gender and their roles vary over time and space (geographically). This is not a recent fact. The Hirja of India have existed for thousands of years.
You are right on that one. Sex is genetic. Gender Identity is Psycho-Cultural.
Gender identity is psycho-cultural in the same way that species identify is psycho-cultural. By definition it’s whatever we identify as. Some people identify as cats. Some as wolves. Most as human. We all know what they really are.
Species is a biological classification, gender is not. You're confusing sex with gender...again.
Species identity is whatever we want it to be. Just like gender identity. You know of course that some people identify as cats. I’m not making this up.
Gender is synonymous with biological sex. Gender roles and gender identity is what you’re discussing.
Gender is synonymous with sex because of your cultural outlook...and ignorance. People can identify as a species all they like, but they're literally wrong.
Gender *is* the masculine or feminine roles and expressions we ascribe to sex.
How hard is this to get!?
Gender=Sex, and there are ONLY 2. How hard is this to get?!
Oh yeah, Prince? Where's your proof? Oh yeah you don't have any. I think YOU are the dumbass here.
