December 6, the anniversary of the Thirteenth Amendment’s ratification, which legally banned chattel slavery in the United States. Emancipation was the greatest single advancement of liberty in American history.

Thanks for the information. I became used to celebrating Juneteenth when we lived in Houston. There was always a fabulous blues festival. We really should have a national holiday like that.

I think the adoption of the constitution and bill of rights were greater advancements than that, but the ending of slavery was a good thing. I would have preferred for it to have ended legally through an amendment instead of costing the lives of 600K Americans because the north couldn’t achieve politically what they could achieve through force and violence.

Clarification: an amendment passed through the normal political process unlike the 13th which passed on condition for the south to be readmitted and given representation in Congress and for occupation to be lifted.

The southern states had to ratify the 13th before they would be allowed representation in Congress and before military occupation would be lifted. They were coerced by military force to ratify it.

I would say it's second, the first would be probably the founding of the US because it allowed for us to earn more liberty. If we were authoritarian maybe we would've never abolished slavery.

Still an amazing accomplishment in the history of the world though!
