Recently, a Harvard math student showed that if given to option to shoot someone or to not shoot someone, mathematically it is better to shoot them. Knowing this, if given the option would you shoot them or not shoot them?

Looks like I don’t have enough money to pay my tab at the bar. Better shoot the barkeep

You’re a Harvard student? Interesting

We looked at multiple scenarios. And to answer your question in half the scenarios the other person did have a weapon.

It depends on the situation? Like I'm not just gonna go run around shooting people because it's the right choice mathematically.

Actually you'd be surprised, in about 73% of the scenarios we came up with, shooting was the better option. In case you aren't good with math, that almost 3/4 of the scenarios.

What scenarios exactly? All I can picture is myself in situations I find myself in every day. Obviously I don't discharge my weapon in 3/4 situations, so what are we talking about here?

Situations involving self defense and others that don't. Others were it's like the rail car paradox where shooting the person will save six other people and a multitude of other scenarios.

Sorry for the unnecessary it's.

Reread my sentence the it's is not unnecessary. Oops.

Okay I've done these "Men in Black" type pistol ranges where we have to decide whether to shoot or not. Those are fun. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but yeah

I don't understand what this means... why would this be mathematical?

11/18/17 8:51 pm

It is if you apply decision theory, risk analysis, operations research, and metagame analysis.

Well, the Harvard student was actually me and a colleague of mine, the paper isn't out yet but it will be by the end of December.

Hmmmm. Little early for a survey if you can’t provide substantiating details. On the surface your hypothesis doesn’t seem to make sense

11/19/17 10:00 am

Do you want me to provide substantiating details? Because I could, but it would take me much more than 1,000 characters.

11/19/17 10:36 am

No. Wait for the paper and create a link.

11/19/17 10:37 am

Have you ever shot someone?

11/19/17 10:49 am

No, But if the scenario was right, I would.
