Fun fact about this classic rock staple: It's about an illegal yet beloved brothel that was operated in a small Texas town for 68 years until a reporter & state authorities shut it down in 1973. Here's ZZ Top performing their hit song "La Grange".

I'm not a huge ZZ Top fan.

The reporter was Marvin Zindler, a former sheriff and the ABC news cohost that coined the term "slime in the ice machine" as well as signing off with "have a good night, good golf, good tennis, or whatever makes you happy!" He was a character.

If you want to read more about the brothel, you should read The Whorehouse Papers. It was made into a Broadway play called The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

Frank Beard's parents lived behind me growing up. The band would throw some incredible parties on their anniversary. A big rig barbecue parked on the vacant lot adjacent to their casa with bikini clad babes cavorting around while non-stop ZZTop music played all day long.

I don't consider mumbling to be a good song.

Not a good song. A great song! My favorite by ZZ Top.

I definitely agree that this is their best song, but it's also hard to go wrong with a band as great as this.

That whole Southern rock genre was responsible for some classics. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, ZZ Top, Marshall Tucker, etc.

Amen to that! Don't forget CCR!

I'd put them ahead of the rest of those bands, but I never really consider them Southern rock since I think they're from the SF Bay area. Their music definitely fits the part though!

They may be from California, but you wouldn't know it by listening to them. They are unmistakably of the Southern Rock genre by virtue of their sound and lyrics.

I agree. They're a perfect fit, by my ears.

I’ve performed this song many times. Love the pattern played on the rim of the snare.

It’s a lot easier than you think. It’s mostly muscle memory, and the passion to learn the language.

Kind of like the difference between learning how to ride a bike on a straightaway, and knowing how to take the curves. The basics of that song can be taught in a few hours... the intricacies require dedication.
