Show of HandsShow of Hands

Just heard a news story on a toddler accidentally shot in the head by his seven year old sister. Should people who have children and guns be required to own safes for those guns?

When my youngest brother was a kid a neighbor’s son shot him in the head by accident when he was playing with his fathers gun. Fortunately it only grazed him. My dad always had a rule that guns had to be locked up, apparently the other family didn’t have that rule.

Yes, and regardless of whether it becomes a law or not it's common sense, keep your guns locked up especially if you have children. Y'all remember the HBO specials from the 90's.

How about the parents, parent. I never played with guns because I was told not to. I was told how dangerous they were and eventually taught how to use them correctly. A safe isn't going to help lazy parents.

They must keep the gun secure. The parents need to lose custody of their son and be charged with manslaughter at the very least

Agreed

Trigger locks are enough. They’re inexpensive, and kids can’t defeat them. Requiring expensive safes puts an unnecessary financial burden on gun owners.

I would be ok with this. I didn't know about these, my knowledge of guns is limited

That’s understandable – you live in California! 😃 Good poll, though. As a grandfather of two with a third on the way, I share your concern. I have a small handgun safe, and I’ve locked up my pocketknives too!

It would just be another law on the books that would be impossible to enforce.

Not required but it's common sense

It's common sense to keep loaded firearms away from untrained children. When my nephew comes over, I unload my pistol and put it on the top shelf in my closet, and I remove the barrel of my shotgun and put it somewhere away from the receiver. Unfortunately some people lack common sense, but that isn't a reason for more legislation. Especially when you consider that safes are expensive AF

No. No gun is "safe" or "safer".

If you own a gun with children you are responsible to secure it in a safe place and teach them about who is able to use it, what the implications of a gun is, etc.

There is no way for the government to regulate this, this is an interpersonal issue between peoples.

And if no gun is safe we shouldn't have them around children. Period
