As a Nation, we have polarization and an unwillingness to compromise politically. Patriotism is not respected. How did we become divided? If you comment, please indicate when it might have happened.

Starts with the media. Being divisive is making them more money than being non-partisan. Change the media to stop the division.

Russia has succeeded in keeping us divided politically and racially. And they have Trump’s lack of leadership. Trump still is trying to fill positions in our government with unqualified people. And the ones that he has, have no idea what they are doing.

The Democrats have done nothing to allow bipartisanship, and everything they can to create roadblocks; yet idiots support them blindly. Democrats aren't leaders. They are only followers!

Blind partisanship, PC Culture and Hyperbationalism are all different sides of the same edifice which is identitarian politics, an edifice which we should raze to the ground before it does the same to us.

It still is. The Liberal Left controls the Democratic Party, and will do anything to gain control of the Country. Identity politics and partisanship is the only thing that the Left has to offer!

It started during GW Bush’s second term. When Obama took office, he made things worse. And same thing with Trump.

Civilization exists in an endless cycle: hard times create strong people. Strong people create good times. Good times create weak people. Weak people create hard times. And then the cycle repeats. I submit that the world has never seen better times than the last century in America, nor has it seen a weaker generation than us.

Not sure exactly when it happened, though I think the ability to control what you read and listen to creates a situation that breads intolerance and adversity towards our fellow Americans.

It's been a process, including the devolution of journalistic integrity (promoting agendas instead of recitation of vanilla news stories), the institutionalization of political correctness and liberal groupthink in the education system (and the resulting demonizing of those identified as outliers), and the reinforcement of all of the above by the entertainment industry, corporate America and its global affiliates, and those whom the gullible populace accept as opinion leaders. In what respect? We don't get anywhere cherry picking news stories to report or deliberately trying to sabotage a perceived opposition. I think of myself as
an Independent, although registered as a Republican. I actually voted for three Democrat Presidents, before realizing my interests were not theirs.

The rise of hate radio, in the 80’s and FOX news started the current divisions, and made them worse, the left reacted to the right with just as much venom, and now we are where we are at.

Talk radio and Fox are a response to over saturation of liberal ideology in the media and an under representation of conservative ideology in MSM and Hollywood

Maybe, but that doesn’t excuse the hate on of that media. Division we have always had, just hate radio, FOX made it what it is today.

Malekithe The Black Hole

Wrong again.
There is hate on both sides.
More on the left based on sheer numbers in televised and print media plus Hollywood.
Conservatives are more dominate in talk radio.

Much more hate on the right, at that time, now about even, but we will agree to disagree.

Zimmy, Fox News bends over backwards trying to be fair and balanced. None of them editorialize, and Shepard Smith is often critical of President Trump. Every debate includes Liberals. MSNBC is hate TV and NBC is not much better. CBS at least tries to be fair.

I’ve never checked out CBS, Harry. Are they pretty neutral? I agree to an extent about Fox. They tell you when it’s their opinion (Hannity for example). MSNBC is similar that they’re honest about their bias.

I hate it when people bash media, but I feel like the 24 hour news channels played a big role in the divide. Both conservative and liberal news outlets demonize the other side. It's all about what gets views. "Republicans are literally trying to start the Fourth Reich" gets a lot more views than "Republicans purpose moderate tax cuts to the wealthy".

You bet they play a role. They have to keep ratings up 24 hours a day now. That is way too much time to just report the truth. They have to make crap up fill all that time.

True, Republicans (before Trump) have usually compromised by caving in. Bush the elder could have been a Democrat. I once knew McCain, when I was in the Navy, and I don't know what the hell he is. I think he has always liked to simply piss people off.

Luckily the republicans during the obama administration forced the sequester cuts otherwise we would be trillions more in debt.

It wasn't an instant but a process that began with WWI.

The world had long known of individual and corporate horrors, but WWI exposed in the bright red of blood, the gluey brown of mud, and the mounds of pale corpses the utter depravity of humanity. The brightest and best of us had hid from that reality until they were assailed by the stench and sights, and the horrific evidence of their own culpability.

And so it began, the appeal of power. DO SOMETHING TO MAKE SURE WE DON"T DO THAT AGAIN! The idiocy of trusting human power to prevent the excesses of human power.
