SOHAH: the rare late night adult topic question: is heavy petting (stroking etc, possibly to orgasm) sex, or does only actual intercourse count as sex?

I find this question interesting because it brings virginity into question. Does losing ones virginity equate to sex/sexual encounter or penetrative sex? If it's penetrative sex, do lesbians not lose their virginities?
I would consider "heavy petting" with my current bf to be sex. But if someone were to ask about the first time I had sex and losing my virginity, I would respond with the first time I had penetrative sex, but not my first sexual encounter.

It's sexual acts, but not sex.

No, but I wouldn't want my husband kissing or even holding hands with my neighbor, either.

Exactly Dr. There are lots of things I don't want my SO doing with my best friend that does not count as sex.

Sex is sex. Things other than sex are...well...not sex.

It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is...

It's all sex. If you're patient and in-tune with their arousal level, you can actually give them stronger orgasms with petting than with coitus. Of course, I consider cumnilingus a form of petting.

They can have “sex” but not coitus

That's my point, sex doesn't equal coitus imo.

I'm amazed that in poll comments of a similar topic, petting wasn't considered sex by some.
I think any sexual activity, especially when having orgasm as a goal (though this isn't a must), is in fact sex.
