Would you volunteer for a mission to Mars if there were only a 50 percent chance of returning alive?

It depends. Are any democrats going?

Depending upon what’s at risk, 50/50 can be either really good chances or really crappy chances, especially if your life is on the line.

To this question, I would have to say NO.

Wouldn't go if 100% certain to return. Better things to do...

God no. I'm terrified of space. So much that could go wrong, and nothing for millions of miles...

I depends on the mission and what the impact is/how big the impact itself is.

Hell yeah. I’d risk my life for space exploration in any way. I’ve always said I would be willing to put my life on the line for knowledge of space just so that my own curiosity would be satisfied.

If I can get a guarantee that I can get to mars, then yes. I don't care if I die as long as I get to experience being on another planet.

I wouldn’t go even if there was a 100% chance, just because I’m not that interested.

Not until I’m older. When I’m 50-60 years old, and if I’m reasonably healthy enough to be useful, I’d be glad to help advance mankind in that way.

I’ve often thought of this question on the assumption of only about 2% chance of returning alive and always end up just slightly on the “no” side of that exercise. Increasing my odds to 50%, I would certainly go.

“...only”? Actually, I think a 50% chance of returning alive from a trip (mission?) to Mars, is a GREAT percentage! But no, just plant me in an interactive seat, put a VR headset on me, and push “Start”!

Would go even if it was 0% chance. Can’t imagine getting to experience anything cooler in my life than setting foot on another planet

What if it's 0% because you're gonna explode on the launch pad?

Henry123 Connecticut

1) it’s % chance of returning so it seems pretty safe to assume you would make it.
2) I would go even if there was a chance I wouldn’t make it there. Too big of an opportunity

It depends on the type of death, but I think I would go. I would rather die in an explosion that suffocating due to lack of oxygen, though. Let that be known.

Id volunteer if there was less than 50% chance of even getting there.

50% is pretty high. That’s the same chance of success Armstrong gave Apollo 11. Good enough for him, good enough for me.

I'd volunteer for a mission to Mars with a ZERO possibility of returning if a safe landing and prolonged stay in a prefabricated habitat has a 90%+ chance.
