Would you volunteer for a mission to Mars if there were only a 50 percent chance of returning alive?
It depends. Are any democrats going?
Make it 0 and I say yes
Depending upon what’s at risk, 50/50 can be either really good chances or really crappy chances, especially if your life is on the line.
To this question, I would have to say NO.
Wouldn't go if 100% certain to return. Better things to do...
God no. I'm terrified of space. So much that could go wrong, and nothing for millions of miles...
Unless this planet is going to explode I ain't leaving
Make it 25% and I'm in
I depends on the mission and what the impact is/how big the impact itself is.
Hell yeah. I’d risk my life for space exploration in any way. I’ve always said I would be willing to put my life on the line for knowledge of space just so that my own curiosity would be satisfied.
If I didn't have a family, yes.
I don’t have an incentive to go.
Five years ago definitely. Now I have a family to take care of.
Still haven’t seen everything on earth yet!
Yes. If the benifits are good.
No I just retired.
50% chance of death, 100% of glory
Depends on how old I am and if I have family here or not
If I can get a guarantee that I can get to mars, then yes. I don't care if I die as long as I get to experience being on another planet.
I wouldn’t go even if there was a 100% chance, just because I’m not that interested.
Not until I’m older. When I’m 50-60 years old, and if I’m reasonably healthy enough to be useful, I’d be glad to help advance mankind in that way.
I’ve often thought of this question on the assumption of only about 2% chance of returning alive and always end up just slightly on the “no” side of that exercise. Increasing my odds to 50%, I would certainly go.
I’d be the saboteur.
“...only”? Actually, I think a 50% chance of returning alive from a trip (mission?) to Mars, is a GREAT percentage! But no, just plant me in an interactive seat, put a VR headset on me, and push “Start”!
Would go even if it was 0% chance. Can’t imagine getting to experience anything cooler in my life than setting foot on another planet
This user is currently being ignored
1) it’s % chance of returning so it seems pretty safe to assume you would make it.
2) I would go even if there was a chance I wouldn’t make it there. Too big of an opportunity
Too old for that crap, I want my wide screen tv and Chinese delivery
If I didn't have my family to think about, absolutely.
It'd need to be at least 80%
Would not go even if paid and there was a 100% chance of returning. I like trees more than rocks.
You know, rocks are just unpulverized sand. And you sound like Anakin Skywalker now.
"I like trees."="I hate rocks."="I hate sand."
Go back to Revenge of the Sith...
NO ! The Japanese called them Kamikaze in WWII🤔
No. THEY had a 0% chance of returning.
It depends on the type of death, but I think I would go. I would rather die in an explosion that suffocating due to lack of oxygen, though. Let that be known.
Id volunteer if there was less than 50% chance of even getting there.
Worth the gamble.
As much as I would love to get away from Trump, I hate dying more. I choose Trump over horrific space-death.
Let's send Trump and you stay here 😎
Can Kelly and go to
Yes. I got nothing to lose on this planet.
You've obviously never known a dog's love.
To go to Mars and be left at the mercy of this derelict government for support? I think not.
Why would I want to go to mars anyway?
Nah, not worth the risk. 50% odds is pretty bad.
I wouldn't do it if there was a 100% chance of returning alive.
Exactly what I was gonna say! 😉
Just kidding. I would though. It would make my life a truly unique experience.
50% is pretty high. That’s the same chance of success Armstrong gave Apollo 11. Good enough for him, good enough for me.
I'd volunteer for a mission to Mars with a ZERO possibility of returning if a safe landing and prolonged stay in a prefabricated habitat has a 90%+ chance.
Eh, I’ve got stuff to do next week.
I wouldn’t volunteer if survival was guaranteed. Whats the point?
Exploration is the point.
There's plenty for me to explore here on earth, plus I can breathe here better
I’ll explore when the VR version comes out.
absolutely. without any hesitation.
I wouldn't even if there was a 100% chance I'd live. Going to Mars would be a hassle and wouldn't be worth it, just a waste of time really.
Before I had kids.. sure
