The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

The most effective route to stop someone in the commission of a crime for sure

I would just say a good guy, whether they use a car, they tackle them, shoot them, etc

The best method is the question, a person is already assumed to be needed

Disagree. Many things have the possibility to stop someone from doing something. We can’t limit it to one thing

Technically true. It’s not the only thing, but a good guy with a gun is the best thing.

Definitely not the only thing. Give a knife umbrella or a pencil and some chewing gum. I’ll get the job done.

But from a practical standpoint it is correct.

No, from a practical standpoint - a bad guy with a gun can be stopped with overwhelming unarmed force, a can of pepper spray, a good guy with a knife, a person with a car, - if he is in a position to be run over, a strategically placed chair, a brick.

Basically, a bad guy with a gun CAN be stopped by one or more good guys.
Period.

The most likely thing that is going to stop him is a good guy with a gun but there are several other ways.

When I had a bad guy with a gun pointed at me a tried to run him over. Long story, but I was lucky to be able to get into my car. If I had a gun he would be dead though.

I don’t think that’s true. I answered no because that isn’t the “only” way.

I agree with voc. I don't think that conclusion is warranted, Ebola. Your logical thought processes are better than that.

Even disregarding the silly or extremely unlikely answers here, it's just not the only *feasible* way, so the logical, honest answer *has* to be "disagree."

Ebola1 Florida
11/06/17 3:24 pm

Actually from a practical standpoint I think the logical answer should be agree.

susanr Colorado
11/06/17 3:38 pm

Well, just be aware that that wasn't the spirit in which I answered the poll, and it may well not have been for anyone else who identifies as a Democrat on SOH either.

I'm envisioning other scenarios where non-lethal or "less lethal" weapons and/or methods of distraction *have* been used successfully. (There's a rather long list of these.) And keep in mind also that "a bad guy with a guy" isn't *always* a fraction of a second away from shooting a victim; sometimes there is a longer time element when other methods besides just shooting them can be used.

So no, the answer is *not* *always* someone else with a gun.

11/06/17 3:53 pm

I do understand your and Voc’s point and don’t really disagree with your reasoning.

susanr Colorado
11/06/17 4:21 pm

Thank you.

Honestly, if you want to determine if Democrats want people to be able to protect themselves, I suggest asking a poll question that really focuses on *that* question and nothing more. (I know, that's not easy to do.)

voc I am...what I am

No. It could be any number of other things. It could be a good guy with a cast-iron skillet (coming from behind). It could be a good guy with a bow and arrow. It could be another bad guy with a gun. It could be a blinding flash of light, maybe from a laser. It could be the appearance of the one person he might listen to. It could be any number of distractions followed by a tackle. It could be an apparition, real or imagined - maybe Jesus will appear in front of him. (Happened in the Bible, didn't it? OK, not with guns.)

Or it could be something that happened before he decided to go shoot a bunch of people he did know (or maybe that he did know) and picked up the gun.

So let’s see, a bad guy killed half a town in a church, 26 people, and the good guy with a gun may have killed the killer or the killer may have killed himself.
Really, I don’t have any problem with gun ownership, but automatic and semi automatic? How about we only allow certified ranges to have them.

What's wrong with semi automatic? You're not gonna be able to defend yourself with a single action rifle or pistol, in fact it'll probably be your death.

@JustHarry Not practical. There’s nothing wrong with semi-automatic weapons.

As I told my friend who just bought a gun.
A guy is going to break into his house to rob him and points a gun at him.
My friend says to the gunman, could you hold it a second. Honey, could you go to the safe and get my gun and bullets. Hold it sir for a second. What do you mean you forgot the combination! Sir,please point your gun downwards, it’s making me nervous.
Oh, you leave your gun under the pillow and loaded. Right where your kids and grandkids can find it.

Or you get a biometric safe that can open in an instant with a specified touch. This can be done as soon as you hear the door knob or window rattling.

NKarta Please excuse my sanity
11/06/17 1:09 pm

Yeah, because you never hear a criminal before they get to your bedroom. Because kicking in a door or smashing a window is REALLY quiet, what with the modern stealth window smashers and all.

Or he gets in and holds one of you at gunpoint while your spouse runs to your room, gets the gun, and shoots him. Or you see him, run to your room, and get the gun.

11/06/17 10:05 am

Actually, there's a lot of things that could stop a bad guy with a gun: lightning strike, random drunk driver, a tiny meteorite... The answer is obvious. We should ban all guns and give out alcohol to drivers so that they can hit active shooters, and blow up the moon so there will be more tiny meteorites!

This one time, me and my friend Darryl rand out of ammo in a fire fight. I took my last round and shot a fire extinguisher to create a diversion of smoke. We stopped the bad guys by tossing them down an elevator shaft.

They stole the guns off of the dudes they threw down the elevator and they were out killing walkers and I assume, collecting ammo after that.
