In February, POTUS signed a bill rolling back an Obama era law that would have made it harder for mentally ill people to buy a gun. Good or bad move by Trump?

To be clear, Congress voted, and Trump signed, a bill to repeal an Obama executive order that prohibited certain Social Security and Vets receiving benefits while having someone else manage their financial affairs from purchasing firearms. This was a blanket executive order that imposed a ban without legal due process.

There is no correlation between having someone else handle your finances and mental illness. However, the agenda driven fake news media jumped on the repeal with deceptive and simple minded statements like "Congress and Trump approve gun sales to the mentally ill!"

Yeah, this is a bullshit lie.

Please, tell us why they had had control of their finances taken away, and what was the process to have that taken away and given to another?

I’ll wait.

Could be for many reasons, many times voluntary, maybe they couldn't balance their checkbook. The point is there was no due process to take away their 2nd Amendment rights. But such constitutional technicalities never seemed to bother Obama, the supposed Constitution scholar.

Oh, ok. So this passed both houses of Congress, including some Democrats, and was signed by the president, yet it enables the mentally ill to buy guns? Ridiculous. Use your common sense, if you have any.

It could not have been rolled back if it was a law. Maybe it was an EO.

Maybe if mentally ill people had all of the guns, they’d have a big shoot-out with each other and would solve two problems in one day.

Good move, because the order let the government arbitrarily decide people were mental, and now you have to get a court order. Its called due process.

Arbitrarily?

Do you know the process involved with having control of your finances taken away? Outline it for me, please.

Please explain this to me, especially if you are a conscientious conservative. Conservatives believe we don't have a gun problem in America. They believe we have a mental illnesses problem in America. They also believe there should be few, if any, restrictions on guns. They encourage everyone to arm themselves and carry weapons at all times. Would that not lead to far more mentally ill people carrying weapons around at all times? Many mentally ill people are already looking to die. They just want to take a bunch of other people out when they go.

If you knew the details of the law, you would know that it reinstated rights for Social Security and Vets recipients who were targeted by an Obama executive order because they had another person handle their financial affairs. They were not necessarily "mentally ill".

Want to know what’s getting tiring?

Mass murder by white men with assault rifles.

Conservatives slavering over their guns while hundreds of people are killed.

What’s exhausting is that we know what we can do to start putting and end to this problem, but a fucking huge portion of the country would prefer having a gun they can finger and dream of being a cowboy.

I am tired of those who yawn and say they are so tired of both sides being so irrational.

Fuck. That.

One side argues for continued mass killings, continued accidental deaths of dozens of children every year.

The other argues for gun control that has worked in every other industrialized nation on this earth.

One side is morally bankrupt and swimming in a river of blood.

You see in other nations it works because they don't have thousands of guns being illegally imported into their countries every year, not to mention way more being produced or stolen.

Also in order to ban guns in the US you'd need to search 330 million people which would be completely impossible if you turned into a police state.

The first thing the nazis did to their citizens was attempt to take their weapons away. Then free speech, then their homes, then their dignity, and finally their lives. The US has the 2nd amendment in place to prevent that from ever happening again considering there are some people who still think like the nazis you'd think you'd want guns to defend yourself.

“You see in other nations it works because they don't have thousands of guns being illegally imported into their countries every year, not to mention way more being produced or stolen.”

Yeah, this is a juvenile level excuse.

Manufacturing firearms is an involved process, and shutting down production would not be particularly difficult. Guns are not like alcohol where it is easy for anyone to produce large volumes on their own. Just as an aside, if you start crying about 3D printers, I’ll know not to take you seriously as you have no idea about the scale of gun production.

“Also in order to ban guns in the US you'd need to search 330 million people which would be completely impossible if you turned into a police state.”

There are already many things that are illegal. Should we use the same “logic” for all of them? Speeding, exotic animals, child pornography, etc.

.

citethesource Socialist and Atheist
11/08/17 11:59 am

These are all illegal. Do we have a police state because law enforcement tries to enforce those laws?

Your position is internally deeply inconsistent.

“The first thing the nazis did to their citizens was attempt to take their weapons away. Then free speech, then their homes, then their dignity, and finally their lives. The US has the 2nd amendment in place to prevent that from ever happening again considering there are some people who still think like the nazis you'd think you'd want guns to”

This is beyond stupid. Stick with points regarding the massive number of guns currently owned by people and the difficultly in enforcing any proposed ban on possession of a firearm. Bringing up these fallacious arguments undercuts any serious point you may be trying to make.

So you think no one should own a gun or any type?

citethesource Socialist and Atheist

I do t think all guns need to be banned, but if they were I wouldn’t care.

I was a national rifle instructor for years. I taught thousands of kids to shoot. I have seen the sport take shy awkward kids and have them start building self confidence. I love target shooting, but I would not for a moment stand in the way of banning even my single shot bolt action target rifles.

I would allow single shot rifles and some shot guns and not much else.

They're not bringing guns into school dumbass, nobody wants guns in schools. They just want to teach safety in order to prevent accidents, it would be very similar to sex education, it's not like you're having sex in a classroom to teach it to kids.

A judge has to decide in court through evidence and reason that you are mental. Before that the law made it where you didn't and people with like certain phobias like dog or cat had trouble or couldn't buy a gun

There are cons to the original rule about what constitutes mental illness. Would fear of cats, or crowds or other phobias apply. Why introduce it in 2013 and wait until 2017 to enforce it. As of now I have no opinion.

Time to break out the handy "Mass shooting checklist":

1. Send thoughts & prayers but don't actually do anything useful. ✔

2. Argue over semantics of the term "assault rifle." ✔

3. Argue over semantics of the term "terrorist" - if Muslim use it, if Christian/white use terms "lone wolf," "mentally ill," "troubled past." ✔

4. Congress does nothing and the NRA increases donations just in case. ✔

5. Wait for next one, rinse, and repeat✔

5. Blame guns as the problem not the offender.✔️
6. Demand new gun laws be added to the already non-enforced gun laws. ✔️
7. Call people gun toters who support 2nd amendment. ✔️
8. Dispute that pick up trucks kill people.✔️
9. Repeat you don’t need guns as the government will protect you. Just like they did in Texas.✔️
