I have had very nice discussions with Mormons on here. We didn’t have Mormons in Russia (that I know of) and I was curious. My questions were answered without making me feel like an idiot or accuse me of mocking them. I shared your poll because I’m connected to some great Mormons. I’m not Mormon though.
How could it not affect the church? It’s against the law in Russia to evangelize outside of the church,
It’s a very repressive law but the Eastern Orthodox have a lot of power there.
Yeah. It absolutely affected the church. The church still exists, but the number of full time missionaries there is greatly reduced from what it used to be and they are now called volunteers since their job became much more service-oriented now that they are largely barred from evangelizing.
I know there are many more, but my memory is not as reliable as sharing with my 1286 followers.
I will say that this is a list of some of the VERY BEST people on SoH. Truly Saints indeed! โ
You’re exactly right! I’m so upset about the “two-thumbed” generation’s tendency to ignore capitalization, even for G-d and the Scriptures. But yes, capitalizing Mormons would have avoided the confusion!
My comment was meant sarcastically, not wanting to give them respect of the capital letter. Petty I know, but so are their teachings, kind of set up to be ironic.
๐คฃ๐๐คฃ๐๐ Tom! Two-thumbed generation! That’s EXACTLY what the newest generation should be called—those that are growing up on tech devices! ๐๐๐
I have a problem with that also, and have actually asked someone why they refused to capitalize the word “God”. I thought they were being disrespectful, only to find out they don’t capitalize anything other than words at the beginning of sentences. It does NOT bode well for the future of the English language when kids spend all day long doing English the wrong way! Imho, it makes them look SO uneducated!
Blue, I see this as a matter of respect. I wouldn’t like it if someone was calling us christians. See, I can’t even type that in, without autocorrect trying to capitalize it! lol Do unto others.....
Blue, I don't have a problem with you disagreeing with the teachings of Mormonism. I do have a problem with you equating them to morons. All the LDS people I know are wonderful people.
I know, have been friends with, worked with many, and often they are good people. But not when it comes to the way their religion is run and how they often treat their peoole who don't follow it just right.
Blue, the Mormons I know on SoH are sincere, born-again Christians who just happen to belong to a church that many feel adds cultism to Christianity, accepting “scriptures” written by Joseph Smith in his attempt to invent a religion based on Christianity, Freemasonry, and Anglo-Israelism (the theory that a “lost tribe of Israel” came to America). The Mormons on SoH don’t stress those doctrines, at least publicly, but instead espouse standard Christian theology.
The problem seems to arise when Mormons become (optionally) “Temple Mormons,” who are ritually baptized in a Mormon temple, given a ‘holy undergarment’ which they must wear for life, and exposed to a drama which teaches them an anti-Biblical interpretation of the Eden story, reversing the roles of Lucifer and God. Those who accept this “mystery religion” aspect of Mormonism are from that point forward deeply mired in cultism and secrecy, which is protected by a blood oath. I have yet to meet a Temple Mormon who can...(more)
2 ...look me in the eye and deny what I just repeated about Temple Mormons. One of my long-time close friends here, when asked in a PM about Temple Mormons, simply didn’t respond, which I interpreted as an unwillingness to break his oath of secrecy. I can respect that, as I do with Freemasons (who take the identical blood oath of secrecy).
• To sum up, there are Baptists, Methodists, Catholics, and members of EVERY church who aren’t real Christians; the same applies to Mormons. The opposite is equally true: there are sincere Christians scattered among ALL denominations, including Mormonism. I’m honored and blessed to know all my LDS friends on SoH and irl. I urge you to get to know them better! โ
And most mormons here in mormonville sound more like the "temple" version you describe. Critical, guilt living, controlling. And ready to kick others out of their church who don't live their way, type of mormons.b
I’m gonna save everybody in this thread some time & energy. I have had these discussions with bluerum before about many things, including the two topics at hand Mormonism and being born again. His views are vastly different from most of the people in this thread and he is honestly not open to changing his views.
Are you in SLC? I would imagine that city has far beyond its share of Temple Mormons. And I’m aware of the control that some parts of the church, especially in Utah, exert over members. But I don’t see that in the Mormons I know here. Maybe @imanag or @jadeburt can speak to that, being geographically close.
I'm outside of Phoenix. The Mesa/gilbert area is considered motown. Had no idea it was a mormon area until I moved here. I can drive 10 minutes and see 4 of their churches.
And my ideas about born again aren't just about me, it's having grown up in a lutheran church. We aren't born again of we grow up in the church. Our heart grows and we just are Christians. We affirm the faith we already have
At the time people were not born into the church of Christianity. Today, people are, so the word f has changed. We are baptized as babies and then affirm our faith during confirmation when we are older.
OK, I get you now, because I was raised Lutheran. But I am a firm Evangelical now. I felt a need to be rebaptized when I was in college, and I no longer endorse infant baptism. I prefer infant dedication, followed by baptism whenever the child, teenager, or adult makes a decision to accept Jesus as Savior and Lord. For both of my kids, that age was about five or six. The New Testament idea of baptism is that it is a proclamation to one’s community that one is now a believer. But I won’t try to change your mind on this, knowing now that you are happy as a Lutheran. BTW, are you ELCA, Missouri, Wisconsin...?
