If you were stranded on an island in the 1800s, uninhabited but not barren, would you rather have a kitbag with tools like knife, ax, flint & steel, rope etc to make survival easier or a companion you know and trust? Expect an indefinite stay.

Another person, definitely. I wouldn't be able to survive even if I had those tools - I simply don't have the knowledge necessary to.

Rope would be the hardest to make, and it's not that hard.

Companion.

A mate. At least I’ll have something to eat.

The tools. The person would just be another mouth that needs fed and watered and ain't nobody got time for that.

I’ll take the tools unless the companion knows how to live off the land

I feel like you'd go crazy very quickly without anyone else there to interact with

I'd definitely want a companion.

My companion has the tools! Hey neighbor, mind if I borrow a hatchet? Bring it right back! Hehehehehehe!

It's funny. People always try to find a loophole to skirt my dilemmas 😎

Just having fun. I'll take the tools. I'm antisocial anyway.

I'd choose the tools, especially since I don't know if my companion and I, even a trusted friend, keep enjoying each other's company or start hating each other's guts after a while.

Yeah but you can’t eat your tools

Lol 😀
That's why I said "not barren".
Without means of preservation, your companion will provide a couple of meals then rot and spoil.
But some basic fishing gear looks promising.

PS: assuming tropical/subtropical island.
If it's an arctic climate, you'll have meat for about three months, a pound a day but that doesn't fit my scenario, an arctic isle would be rather barren. No coconuts...
