If you were stranded on an island in the 1800s, uninhabited but not barren, would you rather have a kitbag with tools like knife, ax, flint & steel, rope etc to make survival easier or a companion you know and trust? Expect an indefinite stay.
I'd choose the tools, especially since I don't know if my companion and I, even a trusted friend, keep enjoying each other's company or start hating each other's guts after a while.

That's why I said "not barren".
Without means of preservation, your companion will provide a couple of meals then rot and spoil.
But some basic fishing gear looks promising.
PS: assuming tropical/subtropical island.
If it's an arctic climate, you'll have meat for about three months, a pound a day but that doesn't fit my scenario, an arctic isle would be rather barren. No coconuts...
