I have found that with age, I care much less about others’ opinions of me and more about my opinion of myself.
I remember hearing a variation of that in church a long time ago. It was related to self-esteem: "What's important isn't what you think of me, or what I think of me. It's what I think you think of me." For me, there's a lot of truth there.
The only perception of me that matters in the least is my own. The perceptions (and opinions) of me by others are completely irrelevant, and easily disregarded.
My conscience is internal, not external. My conscience isn’t influenced by how I think other people perceive me.
