There is a huge difference between the Left and being Liberal.
I respect classic liberalism. Most today are far left progressive or Marxist loons. The left has moved to the extreme left.
Liberalism's definition has been used by the Left to legitimize their actions. Liberty does not occur when the government makes the decisions for you.
All of these labels have been so diluted by all these sub labels it's just confusing anymore.
No difference at all.
Huge difference. Liberals are on the right.
Maybe a classic liberal but the modern definition has changed. Liberal is the same as progressive.
If you don’t understand this you don’t understand politics, simple as that.
Liberals believe in personal freedom. The democratic party used to be liberal before it was taken over by leftists. I would say democrats are now less liberal than republicans, who are second only to libertarians.
Progressive is the misnomer.
Progressive implies forward progress => freedom & independence, not repressive government control.
Also agree. It should be known as regressivism. The left has been all too successful at changing the definition of words to fit their narrative.
There used to be, but there isn't much of a difference anymore.
There DEFINITELY is.
I don’t see the difference. I’m a conservative, and I’m on the right. How is a liberal not on the left? And we’re talking today’s lingo, not “classical liberalism.”
A liberal is vaguely left, sure, but there's leftists that arent liberals.
So left is further left than simply being a liberal ?
Raging is saying that Liberals may be on the left but aren't the only thing on the left.
Yeah. Like communists of all flavors are further left than liberals. Some of the authoritarian communists (Maoists and Marxist leninists and the like, I don't like them very much) even say shit like "liberals get the bullet too"
The American liberal has fallen far from grace
On a French scale, being “Liberal” means the worldview of liberty and equality and is better described as “Classical Liberal” and “Economic Liberal” which means freedom of speech, freedom of press, democracy, free market etc. which would put “Liberals” on the center of the French scale. Take the FDP Party in Germany for example, they’re a center party that would be considered classically liberal
I think of "liberals" as social justice warriors, and "the left" as communists.
In a more neutral wording, "liberal" refers to civil issues, and "left" refers to economic issues
Just like you can be on the "right" without being "conservative", case in point being libertarians
The way I see it, there's actually three dimensions to one's political beliefs:
-Economic control, public/private
-Civil issues, liberal/conservative
-Government type, anarchy/authoritarian
Each of these is on a sliding scale and everyone falls somewhere on the line in their beliefs pertaining to each one. Like for me, I lean toward private, conservative, and authoritarian
Yeah. I'm on the left. Liberals are on the right.
