Jewish religion, after a deceased relative, very usual custom. I’m Harry named after my grandfather Harry. Have cousins named Harriet, Helene and Harvey, all named after our grandfather.

Just middle name, which is a family surname. It's my grandmother's maiden name, AKA my great-grandparents' last name. Seems to have been a family tradition, at least for some generations; my mom's middle name had the same history.
Caused me a little grief in elementary school because it's similar to the name of a bird and I remember being taunted on the playground about it; and again in my young adulthood when I was stopped by cops in northern California (my infamous "I was standing in the rain looking at cows in a pasture" story), when one cop asked me if my *middle* name on my *birth certificate* (this was before non-driving IDs, so I carried my BC for ID) was my maiden name... (I never figured out if this was a trick question, or if he was really that dumb.) But I grew to really like it a lot, finally.
