Neither am I, but my apartment complex (which is by no means luxurious) has fireplaces in many of their units, including mine. I don't use it, though.

You don't have to be a millionaire to have a fireplace. My house used to be a trailer and my dad slowly added rooms and a fireplace. We are low income.

Thanks to Santa I have a small fireplace that burns the cans of gel fuel. Live in condo with no other options! Ambiance, a little bit of heat with crackling sounds and not much mess! Works for me.

Had one at our last two homes and hardly ever used them. We designed our current home from scratch and purposely omitted the real wood fireplace. We have two gas inserts instead, one in the family room and one in the master bedroom. Much better for us!

Yes but it's not a real fireplace. It's just for decoration and we never use the heating system that it's Hooked up to

Style manuals usually suggest not using it in FORMAL writing. But note this, from Wikipedia: "The Christian Writer's Manual of Style, while acknowledging the ancient and respectful use of "Xmas" in the past, states that the spelling should never be used in formal writing." CHRISTIAN writers.

That might be some people's interpretation, Col, but it's not correct. I realize that people do disagree about this, but the ORIGIN of "X" to represent Christ RESPECTFULLY is almost exactly 1000 years. The X REPRESENTS the word Christ.

I have a fireplace, but find it to be mostly decorative. It only heats the area immediately around it and actually makes other rooms colder as outside air comes in through cracks around doors and windows to replace what is going out the chimney.

@susanr...you must have a bean brain. You are insulting against to Jesus The Christ. "X" covers on "Christ" that mean X rejected Him. This is represented of NOT celebrate to Jesus Our Savior! Leave "Christmas" forever to remember of him a new baby in a manger under a bright star!

There is nothing like a good hardwood fire. However, it sucks cold air in through leaky windows or doors and ejects hot air out the chimney. The room with the fire is radiantly heated. However, the other rooms can get colder.

Unless they're in northern CA, EarlyBird. I have a friend in Nevada City who hasn't had power for a few days. High is 34 today. Don't know what her main heat source is but I imagine she has a fireplace or, better, a wood stove.

ColStarry, why not? "X" has been used to represent "Christ" since the year 1021 (when it was used by monks) and "Xmas" has been in use, very respectfully, since 1551. Way before the current contention that it's an attempt to "remove Christ from Christmas."

@ColStarry consider this. Christ's name in Greek is Χριστός. What does that first letter look like? Hmm. So if you're concerned about taking Christ out of Christmas by saying X-mas, then you have new information in front of you right now.

Yeah, how can Montana, North Dakota, Vernont and Maine people deal to live without fireplaces? Merry Christmas!
Remember, do NOT use the word "X-mas"!
