Mars#2: You pilot a supply ship to Mars. Engine failure during descent. If you use the escape pod, you'll live but your ship will crash into the colony, killing many. If you use attitude thrusters to change course, the colony is safe but you die.

Really wouldn't changing course be the only option, as even if you survive, the only hospitable spot on the planet is in ruin?

Probably but it depends on the extent of damage to the colony, how long you can last in the pod and when the next supply ship comes.

This isn't meant to be 100% realistic but about a decision with ethic/moral implications.

In that case, I'm taking the escape pod.

With that attitude, you'd not be on that flight to begin with.

With that scenario, the ship wouldnt take off in the first place.

I would change course. It is better to save many lives instead of just one.

I have a survival instinct like most people. I'm not even very altruistic BUT would change course to save the colony simply because if I don't, I'd be a stigmatized outcast for the rest of my life, if I do, I'd be a hero they erect statues for 😎
