Were the Confederate States right in their claim that a state should be able to secede if they don't agree with where the United States is heading?

That wasnt even the basis for secession when they did.

It was Lincoln's election, but they are similar.

No, it was extremely comllicated and had to do with multiple factors including the fact that the South was literally just bought by America without democratic approval by anyone.

Bought? They didn't buy the South. They took Florida, accepted Texas, and bought Louisiana but that was years before.

Yes, but prior to buying Louisiana, the US had essentially no involvement in the slave trade. It was something they could get from the Spanish if theyd like with minor trading going on in the colonies. Like I said, it was complicated and I havent been in history for a few years now. I find it ironic that the South was the Federalist supporting region but then seceded though lol.

Ask Justice Antonio Scalia. In a 2006 letter he wrote:

I am afraid I cannot be of much help with your problem, principally because I cannot imagine that such a question could ever reach the Supreme Court. To begin with, the answer is clear. If there was any constitutional issue resolved by the Civil War, it is that there is no right to secede. (Hence, in the Pledge of Allegiance, “one Nation, indivisible.”)

YES! If the states are going downhill you can be certain that TEXAS WONT SINK WITH IT. It's always been the rule , you don't get in our business we don't get in yours. The minute the government overreaches Texas says "Adiós" . The states willing join the Union there should be a process for them to leave if they wanted to. A referendum of some kind.

We held a referendum on secession once. It lost. 1861-1865 remember?
