How do you pronounce gif?
God could descent from heaven with 1,000 angels and tell me it's pronounced jif and I still wouldn't believe it
I mean, THAT would probably convince me
Why does everyone bring up the Jiff peanut butter brand when debating in favour of g-if? That point lends no credence to your argument at all and you won't be convincing anyone with it...
This poll shows why democracy is imperfect
I know the developer says it "jif" like the peanut butter, but that makes ZERO sense. So I pronounce it the way it should be and I don't care if that wasn't the intent.
I bought a gift
Looks like 80% of people are WRONG!!!
The developer didn't understand phonetics so... .
I just say it as jiff out loud to avoid meaningless arguments from so many misguided people.
I meant to type giff*
JIF is peanut butter.
It is a soft G like in ginger or genes.
Gerund, giraffe, gentrification, genie, gin, giblets, bon Giovi...
It's actually pronounced "yiff" as the old English word...so what do I pick? 😅
Do you know what yiff is?
That's just how it's pronounced. Gif is pronounced like yiff, that's all.
And yes, unfortunately, yes I do know what it is. 😭
The inventor says "Jiff". So what!
He doesn't own the word. He gave it a spelling that will stick and an idiotic pronunciation that was never likely to stick. As a result he has lost control of the pronunciation. 80% say "Gif" and "Gif" is likely to be how it is pronounced by the great majority now and in 5 years, 10 years, 100 years. Languages mutate, pronunciations mutate. This one has already mutated.
If you want to control how a word is pronounced, then spell it the way you want it pronounced, otherwise expected society to overrule your ego.
Wow, most people say it wrong!
Not my fault the developer doesn't understand English.
GIF Graphics Interchange Format, Steve Wilhite, its inventor, said it should be pronounced, "jif", like the peanut butter, rather than with a hard G sound.
Debate closed !
There are three kinds of people, those who🤔know how things are correctly pronounced, those who😬blatantly incorrectly pronounce them, & those who😳don't have a clue, & don't care anyway!
I've never heard it pronounced with J sound
It is technically supposed to be pronounced giff according to the language of origin, but idgaf.
I can't think of any reason for people to still say gif not like the peanut butter brand beyond stubbornness. The creator says its wrong. The argument involving it using the word graphic makes no sense considering SCUBA or JPEG. Saying it looks like gift is entirely irrelevant, consider, say, heart vs hear. Ive also seen the fact you have to spell the pronounciation jif being different than gif as proof it's wrong, which makes no sense if you have seen how many words are pronounced. I haven't heard any irrefutable arguments for the incorrect pronounciation so far. Meanwhile the word was always intended to be pronounced like Jif with the slogan parody "choosy developers choose gif". This is an actual valid argument in favor of jif. Finally, jif totally sounds better anyway.
Computer people that have been in the business since the invention of the .gif all know it's pronounced JIFF as the inventor said it is pronounced.
Millennials (my kids) refused to believe it and laugh at me when I say it correctly.
The dictionary pronounces it both ways. Just because the founder says "jiff" doesn't make it the correct way. Most people pronounce it how it's spelled--gif--and, frankly, how society pronounces it is the "correct" way. Imagine if we pronounced everything the British way and said it was the right way because that was the original 😛
I guess that's how accents are born.
I do both honestly, but since most pronounce it with a hard G, I just do too. Doesn't matter really.
The first/correct way.
It's pronounced "JIF"
Read why here:
The creator of the GIF format agrees:
Then he should have put a "J" instead of a "G"
No, because it's an acronym. This is an English language operator error, not an English language design flaw.
I pronounce it gwairfe.
It's pronounced g-if.
g i eff
The G stands for G-raphic.
Jiff is a PB brand.
If the inventor had wanted to call it "FIG", would you? No.
It's a hard G sound.
Using your logic, you gotta pronounce JPEG as jah-peeg because a J peg fits in a J hole.
It's homophonic to the peanut butter. That's allowed in English.
That's literally not how any acronym works. You're making up rules to confirm your incorrect belief. Take "SCUBA-" Self Container Underwater Breathing Apparatus. You don't pronounce it "Scubb-a." The pronunciation of words that make up an acronym have no effect on the pronunciation of the acronym itself.
I don't care what the inventor of GIFs says, it's G-if, as in gift minus the t. JIF is a brand of peanut butter.
Except it's not. You can pronounce it that way, but that's not the "objective" answer you claim it is.
YES IT IS.
What gives you the authority to say that that is the ultimate, correct way to say it? As far as I know, language evolves and there are many ways to say different words. Clearly you know more than me, though.
What are you, the acronym police? Any sense of humor in there at all? If not you'll have to arrest me!
How am I supposed to detect humor from "YES IT IS?" Sorry if I misunderstood you. I get unreasonably heated about this topic hahah
So does the g in giraffe just not make the J sound anymore?
Like I said. Gift - t
"G" is supposed to make the "j" sound when it precedes an e, i, or y. Based on that, "gift" is an exception.
Like the peanut butter. Unless it is an animated gif (the only reason I still use the format these days), in which case I just call it a "little movie".
Jiff is the correct anuncuation. The inventor of it claimed that's how it's pronounced.
The inventor is an idiot.
California....that explains it.
Say GIFT, now take the T off. It doesn't change.
I don't !
The g stands for graphics. So I'm pronouncing it like how you pronounce the g in graphics. GIF. Not JIF.
Scuba. Self-contained underwater breathing aparatus. Yet we pronounce it like scooba. Hmmm.
Has someone at SOH headquarters been watching Big Bang Theory reruns?
The creator said it was pronounced "Jiff" so that's what I go by
Jif is a peanut butter brand.
The G stands for G-raphic.
It's a hard g sound.
This user is currently being ignored
Nope it's graphic lol
GIF - Graphics Interchange Format.
The proper sound is the "g" sound. Jiff.
Lucas is the creator of Star Wars and thought Jar-Jar was a good idea.
Creators can be dead wrong.
But he wasn't wrong about how to say Jar-Jar.
Inventors get naming rights. They literally can't be wrong there.
Just trust me guys. I'm a woman so obviously I'm right. 😜😂🤣
Nope. I ain't got no girlfriend right now, so I've got the freedom to win arguments with women and I'm gonna use it!
Yup. It's "Jiff" as in Jiffy girls. It's all about the porn people.
That's not how acronyms work
