I think looking at government intervention in schools is a prime example of how government intervention doesn't work

Isn't that the truth!? When they formed the Department of Education they said they would not interfere with schools and tell them what to teach. Liar liar pants on fire

In 1979, the department of Education was created.
That is when parents lost control of the education of their children, unless they went private!
What ever the government touches they screw up!

Decisions were made at the state level.
Public education before the DOE, was local. Paid and delivered locally...
