How many Americans are in prison jail probation or parole? Which is a better approximation in your mind?
All that I know about about prisons is mainly from watching TV and news reports of prison guards being attacked and protected by inmates. As an engineer who actually did industrial engineering work, I believe that there needs to be design modifications to counteract the ability of prison gangs to terrorize and abuse less violent inmates. Unlike college students, prison guards actually do need safe spaces. Mentally ill inmates need to be transferred to secure psychiatric facilities where they can be helped and not just incarcerated. Our prison system is archaic and probably functions as a training facility for more serious crime. There needs to be actual design and methods improvement to aid the rehabilitation effectiveness of these institutions! I believe that Germany has made significant improvements to their system which might be worth studying.
Lol yeah we have prisons designed by the ancient cultures of hundreds of years ago. Kinda time for an update. Prisons like these were designed for no trial and cruel and unusual punishment. Only difference now is that we have a bunch of luxuries like libraries, colleges, and nicer cafeterias attached.
But what im trying to show here is that most people underestimate the prison population. As of 2013, it was about 1/46. 7/324 to be more precise.
