Suppressors (aka silencers) are legal for civilian use provided it is registered with the ATF. Why? I can't think of a good reason. Should we repeal this requirement?

How about an underslung grenade launcher, too? That's an accessory, too.

Why not? 40mm flares are not uncommon and can be used in any emergency situation.

Haha! Well I believe that due to the high probability of collateral damage, the government cannot protect a citizen who uses high explosives the same way they can protect the military. That's the only reason they should not be sold to the public.

You need it for shark fishing...you never know when a sharknado may strike.

I like the oil filter suppressors. Its the nice cheap way to make your .45 sound like a pellet gun.

At the expense of seeing what you're aiming at...

No idea. Only thing I could come up with is that a silencer is mostly used for nefarious reasons? Like uh murder? What other use does it have? Making sure your neighbors don't get pissed from the noise when you're practicing? Lol

Yeah it is much better for hearing protection. In many countries across the pond they are mandatory is you are going to be shooting outside

It really sucks for murder, because even though they call it a "silencer", that sound is very un-silent. Generally a suppressor just reduces the report below the level of hearing damage, which is good because hunters usually don't wear earplugs.

No Common. They don't sound like lasers...

I don't see a reason to. It's an accessory to a firearm. We might as well start registering taclights and magazines. *sarcasm* Regardless of whether they have to register it with ATF or not it's still a long, detailed, expensive process to get one.

No one is going to say why they think the requirement should stay??

Are you asking if all silencers should be legal or illegal?

Legal with no requirement of federal registration.

It's hard to say without knowing the reasoning behind the law. For now, I'll go along with you.

I don't even none the reason behind the law Ms. Bird. It was included in the National Firearms Act of 1934 which requires federal registration for suppressers, full auto, short barrel rifles and shotguns and the "Any Other Weapons" catch all.

D - knowing it's from the thirties tells me it's an outdated law probably enacted because of the mobsters. They didn't want "hits" to happen without drawing attention. I'm probably wrong but it came to mind. I'm with you on this.

I agree 100%. I think it was a reaction to the mob.
