Was Abraham Lincoln a good president?
He was a very good man who did his best in a very tough situation.
Tough question. He did some great things, but I always struggle to know if it was worth the cost of expansive federalism.
I don't think that the union would've dissolved long term if the Civil war had not been fought. State sanctioned slavery was becoming less and less popular in civilized, industrialized nations. The British got rid of it without war. We would've too.
No, a GREAT president.
Founder of the Republican Party!
I think he was the first republican president. I don't think he founded it.
Umm.. He did win that war against the vampires.. Lets not be so short sited.
Hahahaha! I haven't laughed this hard all day!
Lincoln was dedicated to preserving the union at all costs. He believed the founding fathers vision if America was not to be messed with. He originally fought for new states to be slave free. He despised slavery but was willing to let the southern
states keep their slaves. He evolved over the course of the war to believe that god was punishing the United States for the sin of slavery. Read his second inaugural address. Might be the greatest poetry in English language other than Shakespeare
He did not fight for the founding fathers original vision... He fought against it.
Mostly yes. A little wishy-washy. And trampled on the Constitution from time to time. But so have many others, and he was dealt a terrible circumstance.
The absolute worst in our history
He's still mad about Sherman's March.
Nope, it's Andrew Jackson.
The worst on history was the 15th president, James F. Buchanan. He faced all the problems Lincoln faced, but did absolutely nothing. He let it all fall in Lincoln's lap. Buchanan is consistently rated the worst if the 43 rated presidents.
Livefree i would love to know why you think that!
Ugh, why okie, why?!!
Very tough issues, most people don't like to say it, but the Civil War was not black and white. Which is so closely tied to Abraham Lincoln, you can't ignore it when judging him.
I didn't state a position z.
? I didn't say you did. I meant it like, why do you have to ask such a tough question!
No pizza for you
It really is a hard question. The lack of education in our schools about Lincoln's presidency is depressing, too.
I always have a hard time with this question. Ultimately, I believe he was.
He knew what he had to do to preserve the Union. Unfortunately, preserving the Union came at a huge price.
Exactly, and elegantly stated, I might add.
