Most Americans accept we can eat beef (from cattle), but few will eat meat from a horse. If I want to eat horse meat, is that OK? If not, please let me know why. I'm curious if anyone has ever eaten horse meat or would be willing to.
As long as its labeled as horse then i see no issue. Horse is safe for consumption as is dog or cat for that matter. Had dog. Likely had cat Chinese food and all. Lizard is good as are wolf spiders they pop like pop corn when steamed in your helmet
I am a vegetarian because I personally feel that it is wrong to eat any animal. But if my omnivorous family were to be asked this question I believe they would respond that horses are more like pets than cows are.
Yes on horse, muskrat, raccoon, but no possum.
I had horse meat in italy. Tasted great.
Horse meat is served daily in France and parts of Canada. It is lean meat and doesn't taste that much different than beef, so I'm told. My parents have eaten horse meat after the WW2 in Germany.
Just like any other meat, it depends on preparation. It's usually less fatty so it it tougher.
Cows are considered stupid = edible. Horses are considered intelligent & noble = not edible. Beyond that, I don't know. I do know I'd have a difficult time eating almost anything if I'd "met" it first. I never know who to root for: predator/prey???
But in India cows are sacred. Truly interesting the differences world wide.
Yea I eat rabbits all the time too.
Horses are pets/companions. Not food.
We have a production facility in Afghanistan. Our people there say you haven't lived until you have had a drink of fermented horse milk. Never tried it.
I have heard about it. Doesn't sound inviting to me.
I don't care if you want to eat your dog either..
This is inching toward the reason I don't eat mammals.
That's fair. You are consistent. The inconsistency is really what I'm questioning.
Well it's not currently being raised for meat so it would be like eating a pet.
In some countries it is. And what do you think happens with riding horses? The question was really if you have any issue with other people eating horse meat.
OK, I don't have a big issue with it. If ikea slipped me some horse meat I certainly wouldn't sue them or spit it out. I might have a problem with riding horses. Horse are more like work partners, companions. Bonds form. Eating them could be viewed
like turning on a friend.
I haven't eaten it, but apparently it's incredibly tough.
I've eaten at MacDonalds many times. It's ok.
I ate horse in Iceland. I didn't like it.
Horses, bugs, slugs, rodents, etc. It's all protein. As long as the package is properly labeled so that I can discriminate against it.
That's disgusting! Horses are beautiful animals.
Lol, so are elk - they are also tasty.
Deer are tasty too
That's an interesting thought. Why animal scores highest on both beauty and tastiness scales? Swordfish? Rabbit? I haven't tried it, but I bet peacock tastes good...
I didn't like rabbit.
Ooh, maybe lamb... Yum!
Mmmmm baby sheep
I'd be willing to. My parents had some in Italy, and said it was delicious.
I've always assumed biblical connections, also why we don't eat condor or pigeon either.
The Endangered Species Act might have something to do with us not eating condor, also...
Mainly ease of domestication, pig is widely consumed though banned by some religions.
Bacon is just that good
I don't mind if people eat whatever meat they want, but I don't think we should be forced to eat horse meat when something is said to be beef meat, if that's understandable?
That being said, we think some animals are more companions than food.
Completely agree. The label should match. This question is about the right to eat what you want. I'm not suggesting forcing anyone or mislabeling.
I have owned some horses I wanted to eat. The meat tastes bad from what I understand but maybe if raised different. Cattle are easier to raise for meat and stupid.
My uncle is a farmer, he says meat from horses can be eaten even when the horse is relatively old, it is still tender. Beef from old cows cannot be eaten as steaks, he jokes they can be made into chewing gum.
It takes more land for horses opposed to cattle.
That's true but then we should really just be vegetarian or at least stop eating beef.
It takes way more land for vegetables if that's all we ate.
It should be OK to eat horse meat but me personally I've only had lamb and deer beef jerky. If I've eaten anything else besides that, I wasn't aware if it.
I'm with you Tom I don't understand why people get up in arms about horse, dog, cat, or even goat meat. They're eaten all around the globe but here It's sickening to most why? Is it because you can't separate it from being a pet and that connection?
Agree about the goat. I have eaten it with pleasure.
We have this thing against eating animals we think are cute or smart - dolphin, dog, etc. I think its silly.
I think it's mostly a cultural thing: what is common in world experience. Possibly also "how hungry are you?" & what is most abundant or easiest to catch. "Come here chicken. I don't want to hurt you I just want to eat you." (Name that movie quote)
I think we get the idea that a horse is a much more majestic and important creature than the typical cow or head of cattle. It is capable of doing more than your average cow, anyhow.
There was a scandal in Europe a few months ago, horse meat had been mixed into what was supposed to be beef. It was sold many places including Ikea.
That's different than your question. I always want to know what I am eating
Agree that was not my question, just thought I would share this. Thank you for the clarification.
