An University of Oregon professor has been placed on administrative leave. She had a party at her house at which she wore black face. Her rights of expression were outweighed by her "outrageous" racial harassment. What do you think?
Her house, her freedom of expression , nobody else's business Was it in poor taste? Absolutely. Should she be penalized for it? Nope
I don't know enough details to have formed an opinion. Some positions come with an obligation to conduct yourself in a certain way. I'd want to know if she was in violation of an employment contract.
Somebody put a link at the bottom. I actually think she was trying to make a point for civil rights.
If she had her party in her private home and students weren't invited, the school is wrong.
I don't know if students were invited or not but it was in her home. The story has been ongoing since Halloween, I think she was trying to make a point for civil rights.
If she's a prof, she should know better. I can't imagine a stupider costume.
Given the racism against whites perpetrated on campus these days, this sadly doesn't surprise me.
Another career ruined by the social "justice" warriors.
"Those darn social justice warriors! I can't even act out a violently racist parody of an entire culture without being called racist anymore!"
If progressives had the technology available to them, they would literally monitor and punish the thoughts in your brain
I don't doubt it. Reminds me of the old Pink Floyd line, "We don't need no thought control."
Just thinking out loud...She works for a state university, by extension, an arm of the government, correct? In the same way that government is to "stay out of our bedrooms," why are they now permitted to invade her home, in whatever rooms the party took place? Seems like picking and choosing when to apply a principle.
Very good point. I still think she's a dimwit though.
Universities aren't part of the government
The university is wrong.
Is it possible she sees herself as a black people similar to people picking their gender?
She might be like the white chic in Washington that used makeup to fake being black. She was an NAACP executive. She identified as being black.
Actually she was trying to point out something for black rights. I guess she did it in a inappropriate manner. What really irks me is they claim to be very liberal at that college, however they had the most violation in woman's rights of any school in America when it came to sports.
Good to know. Dumb move though.
Actually if I was there I would have pulled her aside and ask her " What! Are you fn nuts to dress like that?"
While I think her behavior was extremely tacky, especially for an educated person. I think things were quite overreacted. She yet may lose her job over this. This was in her home not in a classroom.
Seems like her intensions were honorable.
I agree @TopsQueen.
This isn't a free speech issue, the government isn't involved, its the company firing her for being a disgusting racist
It's an university University.
It's a state funded school that gets federal money.
Getting federal money =/= being part of the government
She should sue.
I thought you guys were all for the relationship between employee and employer being fully consensual
Maybe she sees herself as a different race like a gendered selection.
Maybe she identifies as Al Jolson. In that case, we should respect her identification as another person and not be offended.
No, Universities are not the government but where government money comes in, rules are different. Most public Universities are primarily state government funded. However, some things could prompt a state to worry about losing state funding or a University to worry about state funding being cut.
Read the link I posted above. Her intentions were good but being a professor doesn't necessarily mean you are smart. But she did hurt the feelings of some of the children and must be punished for offending snowflakes.
