The Viking god Odin is one precursor to the modern Santa Claus. According to myth, Odin rode his flying horse, Sleipnir (a precursor to Santa’s reindeer), who had eight legs. In the winter, Odin gave out both gifts and punishments, and children would fill their boots or stockings with treats for Sleipnir.
He had 8 legs so he could carry spare stockings in case the kiddies forgot to hang them. Sleppy (Sleipnir's nickname) would wear a stocking on each leg then when O-Dawg saw a kid forgot to hang one, he could just peel one off of Sleppy. One day Sleppy got tired of this and, in anger, kicked Odin down a chimney.
A legend was born.
