Parents: have you ever been drunk or under the influence of a recreational drug around your children when they were under the age of 18? If you don't have kids, then did your parents ever do this around you when you were under 18?

My dad was always drunk. My mom never drank.

No. My parents were never drunk, although they went to business-related cocktail parties. I don't even do that, and never had a drink around my daughter, who was born six years before I was diagnosed with diabetes. I haven't had a drink since my diagnosis.

My dad always drank. I even had to make drinks for him at times

I saw both of my parents drunk prior to my 18th birthday on multiple occasions.

Never, my mom hardly ever drinks, and my dad has a large alcohol tolerance.

Never. At least not as children. When I go out with my daughter I usually will have a limit of two drinks. I can feel it so I don't know if I'm drunk probably not legally. She says I'm really cute and friendly

I have a glass of wine with dinner I'll ask my son and daughter-in-law if it was OK to have a glass of wine in front of the kids

I specifically avoided it. It was a bad scene when I was a kid.

Yes, never any damage done thank god.

And before the question is asked, I have been drunk (not falling down, not slurring Etc.) but also not just tipsy, drunk.

My first marriage was at 19 and that's when I bought my first house and started a family. I was a child and am not proud of the fact that I drank and (periodically got drunk) and that I also drank and drove.

Not a part of my "proud" history, but that's the answer to the question.

Define what you consider drunk. We drank at parties all the time. No lampshades on the heads, no puking, no falling down, just buzzed.

Yeah... is it really that weird? Everyone in my family drinks around their kids.

Do they get drunk or just drink?

No it's not weird at all. It seems a little puritan to me to not ever let kids see adults drink.

The question isn't about letting kids see you drunk. It's about being drunk in front of them. There is a big difference.

By the way, Milk ... Your parent filter didn't work. Look in the results. People without kids voted.

MrMilkdud
12/19/16 8:15 am

I know. The parent filter doesn't work. That's why I gave instructions for non-parents.

sweetnes34 Outta Phucks
12/19/16 8:15 am

He also asked if you don't have kids then did your parents do this in front of you so there's no reason for a parents only filter

Just another thing to add to the list of things they'll never fix.

I'm unsure of the difference between being drunk in front of your kids and letting the kids see you drunk

Now I see what you meant. I was referring to a few comments previously that implied it's improper to even let children witness drinking

MrMilkdud
12/19/16 8:18 am

It was a typo- she meant drink.

GrandmaALiCE
12/19/16 8:23 am

Milk and seeetnes, I see my typo now! Yes, I meant "drink" in the first part. My comment, as typed, doesn't make any sense! 😊

I thought the parent filter used to work. Oh well! 😥

I don't hardly drink (1-2 beers a year) haven't done drugs since I got married. So no...

My parents, that's a much different story. Dad would drink whisky before he got out of bed to pee in the morning.😢✌️

No to both. That would be inexcusably irresponsible.

How? Being drunk isn't always a bad thing. Disowning them for being gay is inexcusable parenting. Letting children witness normal healthy adult behavior is just fine and no where inexcusable behavior.

"How? Being drunk isn't always a bad thing."

If you are drunk, you aren't in control of your actions. How can you responsibly care for your children when you are drunk?

"Disowning them for being gay is inexcusable parenting."

I agree 100%, but that wasn't the question.

"Letting children witness normal healthy adult behavior is just fine and no where inexcusable behavior."

I don't see being drunk as normal healthy adult behavior. Drinking is normal healthy adult behavior, in moderation. But not being drunk.

I'm not saying being a falling down drunk all the time. But I remember my dad being drunk in celebration several times through my childhood. I was well taken care of and don't think any less of my dad because of it. I loved when my mom's sister & family would visit. We'd have a welcome party and 3:4 adults drank too much but it wasn't a horrible scarring thing to witness. Celebration is a part of life it should be shared with children as well.

I guess it depends on how you define drunk. To me there are different levels of drunk.

GrandmaALiCE
12/19/16 8:16 am

I see what you mean. That would not be harmful to children, as an occasional thing.

Honestly, I can't relate to it, personally. I don't even enjoy drinking, but I have nothing against people who do.

That was to sweetness.

Blue, that is correct. The kind of drunk sweetness describes implies that there is still some control.

when growing up my best friend's dad was a drunk. It was good for her to see alcohol could be enjoyed & doesn't always mean messy drunk.

Looks like I'm the bad parent in this group. There were several occasions when my kids were growing up, where we were in social occasions, (weddings, NASCAR races, etc) where I had drinks.

I don't think that makes you a bad parent! Kids are stressful...parents need to let loose sometimes too. :)

I'll have a beer in front of the kids now and then, but one beer isn't going to get me drunk.

I'd say perhaps tipsy. Never drunk.
