"Teachers unions are there to protect benefits and privileges, not necessarily to improve schooling"?

It's not what they SHOULD only be there for though.

Teachers unions are the most detrimental part of the education system

The Communists don't care educating children. It's indoctrination.

I thought people were supposed to negotiate wages?

Exactly. Thank you.

That's what unions do, negotiate wages and benefits

I know what the Communists do.

So people doing what they're supposed to under the free market makes them communists?

Lol. You're funny.

I can understand how in the past unions were needed when different groups had no representation and little in the way of rights. Times have changed and I don't think we need unions as much anymore

There's no denying that.

As someone who wants to get into teaching I say definitely true

Kids? What kids? Teachers' unions are the best argument for home schooling.

People that believe such ideas are usually against unions in general, which is a mistake, because strong unions are a critical part of a strong middle class.

That's right. Unions do nothing to benefit the children. In fact, quite the opposite.

I completely agree, @Earlybird . One of the reasons I chose a different profession. Elementary Ed was my other passion.

I didn't know that, screen. You would have made a great teacher.
It's too bad the union discouraged you. I'm sure there are others that felt the same way.

Thanks EB! There are several other factors too, but the whole union piece was a major contributor. Maybe I'll go get my degree when I retire from hospitality, and teach at a private school!

You must have some crazy unions where you're from...mine doesn't impact my daily life hardly at all! It's all about the students and our union supports that! Sorry about the those unions...but I know it doesn't represent the majority!

A handful of voters disagree with that quote. Can at least one of you explain how teachers unions improve schooling?

Pay the teachers a decent wage and they teach kids better

Agree, and it is exactly the same for police unions.

That's not inherently a bad thing.

It is because school districts have a very hard time getting rid of bad teachers which is one main reason why our schools are failing.

That's a problem, but I personally know many members of teacher's unions, and they are great. I went to school with many Union teachers, and I learned a whole ton.

Of course there are good teachers and many of them don't like having to work with bad teachers either.

So union bargaining is not inherently bad, even though some may abuse the process.

Spot on. The teacher's union only serves the interests of tenured leftist ideologues who don't want to be fired for deciding to indoctrinate America's future instead of giving them a quality education and the tools to succeed in life.

And I ask, what is your definition of "quality education"?

gluxford1 Arizona

Teaching facts, skills, and the things you need to know in life without the intrusion of ideological bias, anti-American propaganda, and cultural Marxism.

True Glux. They seem more interested in pushing liberal indoctrination than an actual education. No wonder we are behind in stem knowledge.

The children are NOT the focus of the teachers union. These thugs care only about increasing the dues that fill their pockets.
