I would go to my kids function even if it's my companies party. But I work for a company that understands that.

A perfect example of why I don't want kids.

Spouse goes to the party. Leaves early. I go to school. We meet later for a Family banana split. Simple

Children will ALWAYS come first.

He will thank me when I can help pay for his college tuition later in life.

Kids remember if their parents attended (or not) those things. Even if they poo-poo the school program event, they'll be upset if you're not there.
