A judge has ordered the beard of the accused Fort Hood shooter to be forcibly shaved before he appears in military court (he grew it for religious reasons, but the Army bans beards). Should he have been allowed to keep the beard?
I think that murderers should automatically lose some of their rights the moment that persons life is taken so should a right or two
I assume that the judge acted in accordance with the Uniform Code of Military Justice. If so, shave it. If not, let him keep it.
We shouldn't waste our time with court ship his ass to Gitmo.
Not if he is still in the military. I don't see why he would still be in the military...
I might misunderstand but if he joined the military, he must follow their rules
So the judge ruled against his beard. What was his ruling on the color of his tie? Did he also demand all boots and medals be shined and sparkly? He simply will not stay in a court that is so drab! Geez what a drama queen.
How about the folks he killed? Shouldn't they have the freedom to still be alive?
A beard is a silly thing to worry about given the magnitude of his crimes.
Lol, he's still in the Army. He still as to follow the rules regardless of his newfound religious fervor.
When he goes to prison he can grow a ratty beard.
I'm so glad to see a fully red map on this question. It shows common sense still as hope in this country.
To those that voted that he should keep the beard, you should be ashamed of yourselves.
Anyone who cares about their own religion should allow him to keep his beard. I am not religious, and don't care about the issue, but I think a lot of republicans are being a little hypocritical because I know a lot of you do care about your own religious freedom.
Listen - unfortunately he was / is a member of the military you follow the military laws No BEARDS in a military court. This person is a disgrace to humankind!
You sound like an a$$hole. I hope you know.
He's not in jail. Is he?
Yes he should keep it, but I dont say that for supporting religion, but because I care about peoples freedom of decision.
He broke the law, he lost any right he may have. This should go for all people in jail.
They didn't let you have a beard SweetiePie? Lol
Adultery is illegal, officers are not allowed to speak publicly against their superiors. (President included), and many more differences. Many of the points of the Bill of Rights disappear in the military, because they have to.
Also, keep in mind that UCMJ allows many legal precedents that civilian courts do not. There is no such thing as double jeopardy (You can be tried for something in a military court after already being tried in a civilian court), the death penalty is enforceable anywhere, ...
Actually, the not speaking against your commander in chief is for officers only.
Plus he is still a military member until the court proceedings decide he isn't. Even as a prisoner in a military prison afterwards, he has to follow military regulations. He agreed to that when he joined.
It's military court, not civilian. They have rules.
In the military, rules supersede your comfort, freedom, and god.
I agree. I'm not defending him. I'm saying if he can't even do a small thing like shave his face, he shouldn't have been let into the military in the first place.
His life should be forcibly removed from him.
F his beard - and him as well.
He's still in the military. He still has to follow the rules. There are plenty of Muslim men without beards.
I was in the army there are a lot of things you aren't allowed to do. You can't speak against the president, you can't cheat on your spouse, your hair needs to be cut, no beards, no fake nails with white tips etc. he is still bound by the rules even in military jail.
Johnny: please shut up. Believe it or not, this is one if those rare SoH questions that has a "right" and a "wrong" answer. Your wrong, and the more you post, the more ignorant you sound. So again, shut up. I'm not saying this to be mean, I'm saying this to help you out.
To hell with the Constitution! Right? That is what you are advocating......
This guy, who did this horrific act, still has the rights that all those folks who are herein calling for his torture and summary execution have. A fair trial, not being subjected to cruel and unusual punishment. But given that he agreed to serving, he does not have the right to wear a beard.
CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS OF THE MILITARY BY SUBCOMMITTEE ON CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE JUDICIARY
UNITED STATES SENATE
"No persons should be more entitled to protection of their constitutional rights than the servicemen engaged in protecting the sovereignty of the United States. "
Jonny if he wasn't in the military he would have every right to have a beard but he submitted to their standards when he joined the army
Who cares? He is a murderer. Stop wasting time and put the bastard on trial.
constitution does not apply to him, only the UCMJ!
Radical Muslims do not follow any law and we all worry about any accused muslin because of the lawless power they have access to.
This is a whole new type of criminal. The only thing close to it that I can think of are the riots that have occurred before when a group of people believe one of their own has been treated wrong - around the world, not just here.
He's stalling and trying to generate chaos. It didn't bother him before not to have a beard.
Jonny, he lost all of his constitutional rights when he shot up that military base. He is an enemy of the state.
War criminals still get tried.
Yeah, down with the right to haebius corpus...
The constitution bans such religious intolerances.
Yeah, religious intolerance is really funny...
To be honest, it really doesn't matter. It's just a beard.
Use the grease from bacon fat to lather it first.
He's still an active member of the military being tried in front of a jury of peers. Gotta follow the rules, which includes no beards even for religion reasons.
Although to be honest I'd rather just let him grow it out and not have to waste time and energy shaving him.
Best show on TV. Netflix it. The first 3 episodes are a lot of set-up, but you'll get hooked.
Hahaha. I kinda like this side of you RJ.
No only because he was a soldier himself he knew the rules. If this was a citizen or even a terrorist being tried in regular court then yes they should but he was in the military he knew the rules and their judicial system is a lot harsher.
hell no, I mean oh HELL no..that coward lost his rights to ANYTHING when he picked up a gun and killed those people...The HECK with him.., someone ought to slit his throat instead
He's in the military. No beards. So, yes he should shave.
