Would you say you're generally optimistic about the future, or pessimistic?
Pessimistic. I fucking hate the holidays for one thing. Plus this shitshow of an election depressed me. I lost respect for this country when they voted for a reality star and a bad senator.
Very optimistic now. I now finally feel like I have hope in the future unlike the past president which gave us no hope and no future. This is going to be a great Christmas.
I'm optimistic now that the liberal idiots have been thrown out!
Funny dumb though. Lol
Liberals have, factually, destroyed the western world
You wouldn't know a fucking fact if it punched you in the mouth you dumb ass sack of shit!
Booo! You suck! Go fuck yourself clown!
This is why I don't often debate liberals.
Over the past 7.9 yrs very pessimistic, and now slightly optimistic - and hoping it grows after Jan 20th!
Optimistic! Uh oh, I thought conservatives were the doom and gloom ones?
Optimistic, especially with the technology we'll have
Devils advocate here. What about the loss of privacy, the increased obesity rates, tech as job killer, cyber warfare, loss of the ability to communicate effectively face to face, AI warnings by Steven Hawking and others...?
Trump has promised to fix everything.... himself, believe me!
My own future? Extremely optimistic. On track to make 6 figures with my current employer once I have my masters in hand 😎
Career-wise; pessimistic. Family-wise; optimistic.
The futures so far have been pretty great as they became nows, then thens, and I don't expect that general trend to change anytime soon.
I'm generally *realistic* about everything.
Poll Q, for iPad users:
Would you say you're generally optimistic about the future, or pessimistic?
I've been very pessimistic....Only since Trump has been elected
Greatest part about being a pessimist: you can never be disappointed.
Hillary victory last month would have made for a more pessimistic answer for my deplorable self.
Once you give up "leaps of faith" as philosophical suicide and also physical suicide then you can live "optimistically" and embrace the absurdity of life.
To be free and give life meaning you have to recognize the absurdity of life.
The world is a cesspool of depravity and will not change for the better.
Some people call me dream crusher, but when a kid says to me "I'm gonna be an player in the NBA!" I tell them that they're not gonna be anything special and that they are just gonna get a normal job. They always say everyone is special, but that's not true. Chances are, you're not special in any way.
Pessimistic. I'll either be right or pleasantly surprised.
Overall pessimistic. I've lost faith in the majority of the world honestly.
They say that pessimism is a sign of superior intellect
I have to agree. Smarter people tend to realize how the world actually works.
More democrats are pessimistic than republicans, so what's that tell you about the latter's intelligence?
I would argue that would be different if Hillary won the election
Without looking at the comments, I'm sure here will be a bunch of political argument.
I'm sure there is. There is political comments on questions about puppies vs kittens on this app.
Not *too* much, but think did try to pull some bullshit on me below.
Agonist, I hope you're right.
I guess I feel pessimistic about the near future and optimistic about the distant future. Weird. I'd never realized that before.
A lot more optimistic now that lucifer lost the election (and Brexit happened and the Cups won the World Series)
(Ahh spell check. How I love thee)
"Lucifer" lost and a bigot one. Yay 21st century...
Just wait. Next election we will have Satan and a reincarnated Hitler competing for the presidency.
Despite the national tragedy of Trump's election, I believe in the infinite resilience of the American people to overcome extreme adversity.
You're like those conservatives who thought the world was ending when obama got elected lol. Get a grip on reality son
Very optimistic. My kids are growing big, strong, and smart, my wife still puts up with me, and I'm doing great financially and emotionally. Trump can't stop me from being happy, or from carving out a good future for my kids.
Phal ... thanks to Mr Trump we will finally emerge from the Obama morass and the wilderness of Democrat depression!
Our children now have reason to hope that the future will again reward the industrious and hold accountable the lazy.
We have not been in a depression by any means. I'm not an Obama fan, but we haven't been in a depression.
Think, I just made six figures for the first time in my life under that 'morass,' thanks to my great union trucking job...which is a bellwether for our economy. Tell me again what the Republican (and Trumpian) position is on Labor Unions.
Oh, and I just worked 14 hours driving through a snow and ice storm. There's a 'lazy union worker' for you.
Phal ... I don't speak for Mr Trump. I can tell you that having been forced to join a union when younger. I'm very grateful to be free of the AFLCIO for thirty plus years.
Union's are a cancer on society and should be disbanded.
No one 'forced' you to join, Think...we're all free to choose what jobs we want and can get, and unions themselves are democratic organizations. You'll be missing that AFL/CIO pension you would've gotten when you retire.
No shop ever unionizes without a majority vote from the people working there. They're elected collective bargaining agents that get workers much better pay and benefits for what they do. That's hardly a 'cancer' on society. More like a choice.
Phal ... I see you really don't understand. I was hired by the company. I was content to work for the company. I was forced to join the union. Iowa is a closed-shop state.
I understand. Ohio is too. That shop was either Union when you hired in, or the Union was voted in by a majority of your coworkers. Democracy happens. I've been through an unsuccessful attempt to unionize...I know how it works.
Aaah, I see...yes, the company initially hires you, and later you have to join the Union after a probation period. That changes nothing...I'm sure you were well aware that it was a union shop before you applied for a job there.
You could've just stuck it out and accepted promotion to foreman or supervisor, and boom, you're out of the Union. Why you would want to do that I have no idea.
Phal ... the union strangled the company. They finally shut the doors -- after 80 years -- because of the greed of the union thugs!
It's sometimes tough to know what the real reasons are (could've been corporate greed), but it's in no one's best interest when that happens, including the Union's. Good ones have competition clauses and such in their contracts to prevent that.
Phal ... of course you can kick up fear, uncertainty and doubt from afar. I lived it up close. I saw the price of our products fall as the union demanded even higher wages.
I saw the company struggle and finally shut the doors, leaving 550 people out of work. In 1980, I made $40k as an unskilled meat cutter. That was a HUGE salary! My base was $18.60/hr and we got plenty of bonus and overtime because the union standard was held artificially low.
The company closed. The plant remained unused for two years. The Iowa Beef Processors bought it and opened it with no union. The workers are now paid $6.50/hr and no bonus.
Oh, and who do you think the plant superintendent is ... yep the old union president.
Think, I'm not unfamiliar with how that stuff works. You all elected your union president, you had input on contract negotiations...which should've been tied closely to company profits or lack thereof, and you said yourself that you made out
like a bandit on union wages as compared to nonunion ones. When a company fails, many factors are involved, and when a union is involved in this failure, there's plenty of blame to go around...they wouldn't have pushed for higher wages during a
downturn if they weren't being pushed by the rank-and-filers...that's suicide. Many unions have made big concessions during bad times. The fact that your meatcutter plant was closed doesn't invalidate the whole principle of collective bargaining.
I've worked nonunion trucking jobs before, and I know which I prefer...and honestly, I'm sure you do too. I also have confidence that we'll be just fine, because our Union does what we tell it to do. No one asks for a raise in bad times.
Phal ... and you think the majority in my union thought their union was in trouble? Almost all of the guys I worked with had bought all the toys and houses based on the expectation of continued work.
The greed of the union led discussions led directly to the demise of the plant. Then, so "committed " to his union brothers, the president abandon his so-called views to become the superintendent.
Union's in the 1920s served a purpose. Today they are thugs extorting money from business to perpetuate more fraud. Consumers pay a heavy tax for these thugs.
Neutral at best. Prolly leaning pessimistic
Why? Why not be happy about what the future may hold? Look forward to the small joys in life and quit looking at the giant picture. No one has to change the world to be happy.
Because we elected a WHITE MALE!
Look, Donald Trump doesn't matter. As long as you are breathing, life is good. Again, the little things, like first waking up in the morning and not knowing what stupid crap you did the day before for around 30 seconds, is probably the best feeling in the world 😂
The word is "probably".
Yup, that is a key word. But what is it that makes you all not look at the happy side of things? Being pessimistic about just about anything hasn't helped anyone.
Being pessimistic is a waste of time and gets you nowhere.
Scruff says "Optimism decreases with Age".
Optimistic. I just got my bachelor's degree, thank Christ.
Nice work GF! Congrats!
You went to fuck college? How did you get in I hear they have crazy tough admission requirements!
Yeah, fuck college ain't for pussies...you really need to give a shit and bust your ass!
Hey watch the language man fuck college is a private Christian school and strictly prohibits cursing
Thank you all. The SoH community never lets me down with the hilarity.
Great job, gun!
Congrats! What's next?
Nice! What's the bachelor's in?
General studies, and I'm looking into doing law enforcement for a few years then doing private security contracting overseas after that.
I like money (like, a lot) and I'm not afraid to do bad things to bad people in bad places, so security contracting will be right up my alley.
I am certainly optimistic about MY future, and increasingly optimistic about OUR future!
I'm very, very optimistic for my future.
Before election day, I would have said generally optimistic, now, it's probably 50/50 at best
That's funny because before Election Day I was pessimistic and now I'm totally optimistic!
I'm sure there are several people who are thus misguided.
Lmao. Same with you bub. Hillary was never going to bring anything good to America, we at least have a chance now.
A chance of going to war.
And a chance of winning a war. And a chance for better jobs. And a chance for security. And a chance for lawfulness. And, and, and....
And a chance to live in a world completely unbound by facts and evidence.
RJ ... since MrO unilaterally disarmed and snatched defeat from the arms of victory, we've been at an increasingly greater risk of war. Let's hope that intelligence will overcome the era of Obama arrogance and we can return to a world of relative peace.
You're expecting greater peace with an idiot bully like Trump in the white house?
Don't hold your breath
You expect we can go lower in the area of peace with how badly Syria is burning and ISIS is running the show in so many places? That's terrifying.
Lol. Unbound by facts and evidence coming from the people who are blaming Hillary losing on the Russians but claim there is no way any illegal could have voted. Lmao!
Brent ... is peace what you call the morass that MrO is leaving?
Things aren't perfect now, but Trump is the poster child for "the ugly American", there isn't anything in Trump's history to suggest that he's got the capacity to make it better
You guys are too into it. Enjoy the holiday season!
Lol. But Hillary would have? Ya right.
Listen I don't like either of them. I've never seen or heard of two worse possible candidates for president in the history of the United States to be honest. But at least Hillary could speak in proper sentences.
Ya I think "bigly" was the word of this election haha. But they literally was the only thing going going for her and her arrogance and corruption proved to damaging for voters to trust the presidency to her.
Optimistic, although more so for the world than for myself in particular.
Optimistic in general.
Optimistic! I KNOW everything isn't & won't be perfect, but I tend to focus on the positive unless someone brings up those other things.
Because I know where I'm going, Heaven.
I know too, and stop calling me heaven
That didn't make any sense, you are not Heaven!
You're misuse of grammar allowed for a joke that went straight over your head mate lol
Yes, I get it. You have a mean streak, don't you?
Who me? Or the reference to the joke from Airplane?
I've always thought about the future.
I would say I'm a cynical optimist, but not a pessimist.
Was ... I'd suggest that you're just desperate to draw attention to yourself by posing as strange.
It's true. I'm optimistic about the future, but cynical about the past and present.
Was ... you're just another snowflake crying for attention.
Why the hell did you feel the need to respond? You're just being a dick for the sake of being a dick.
Was ... no, just musing that you seem to need relevance by over complicating nearly ever topic.
Who said anything about needing relevance? This app is about having fun. Why do you feel the need to criticize me on even the most banal topics?
One correction, Doc. This place USED to be about having fun.
I used to have Think on ignore for things like this.
Was ... and your response was totally reasonable, right?
Which one? You said a lot of condescending things for me to respond to.
Was ... fascinating! I didn't ask about what I said, now did I? Isn't it interesting that when I ask you to take responsibility for YOUR own comments, you look at my comments instead.
Why do you think that is?
I was asking which of my comments you want me to take responsibility for. I'm willing to take responsibility for everything I say online, including comments in this thread. But what the hell are you on about?
Was ... at 1:02pm MST, you said:
"Why the hell did you feel the need to respond? You're just being a d**k for the sake of being a d**k."
Yes, I take responsibility for that comment. I don't know why the hell you do it, but you rarely hesitate to find something to harass me about. I don't know why the hell you do it.
Was ... I guess your a victim, aren't you! You make ridiculous statements but don't want to be accountable for them. Yep, you're a leftist.
I just said I take full responsibility for the comment, and that I want to be accountable for everything I say online. Where are you coming up with this bullshit?
Wow, Think...to get under DoctorWasdarb's skin...that's a real talent you have lol!
Phal ... don't be ridiculous yet again.
Optimistic. I do what I can to steer my personal life in a positive direction. As for the things I can't control...I stay optimistic to help maintain good mental health. Being optimistic doesn't mean being a Pollyanna or closing your eyes to the negative things in life though. There's a balance.
Really optimistic now that Trump will be president.
We are moving forward in plenty of things. We are living longer, are getting smarter, and the rest of the world is becoming less poor. Countries like India and China have brought hundreds of millions of people out of poverty in a few decades, and we will see these countries poverty free in the 21st century. Genetic engineering is allowing us to fix people with disabilities and other diseases. In fact, a young girl named Layla in the U.K. was cured of her leukemia using gene editing technology. Racism and sexism are slowly dying out. This century will be good in general. We will have problems like every other generation, but I think we are in a better situation.
I like everything you have to say except that "China and India will be poverty free in the 21st century". Sorry but no they won't. America still has poverty and we've been fighting a War On Poverty for over 50 years and made no serious progress.
Depends on what you mean by future.
Future of this world, of human society and culture: pessimistic.
Future as is in the afterlife, heaven, and God's ultimate plan for His creation: optimistic.
Depends, most things I'm optimistic about, buy there are a couple biggies I have no faith in any more
Seeing the amount of kids who supported Bernie, I'm pretty scared for the future.
Funny, that's one of the few things that has me optimistic
The glass is always half full for me👍🏻😃
Mine too! 🍷🍹🍸🍺
