Are there any materials from work or school that you sometimes use there for, um, play? I know of a number of examples from working in labs, & some from the office - popping bubble wrap being the one that inspired this poll. What have *you* used?

In high school, I programmed every TI-84 and 83 I could get my hands on to, when an equation is entered, always return zero or a random number as the answer. And sometimes I'd make it say "Do it yourself." The reactions were always great to watch.

Syringes and water...when I was stuck at a hospital during a blizzard, we got snow from outside and decorated them into snowmen using medical supplies.

Racing, off roading, bumper carts, general "wrecklessness" pun intended. And of course 360's and burnouts and towing people on top of a shop vac. Ghostin the whip. Driving two at once. Two wheeled drive contest (drive on the side two wheels only.

I would 'page' my boss to different areas of our office suite. Sometimes while he was in the same room.

We'd play ball in the main hallway in the building when the power went out. Building manager didn't think it was too funny. Six offices of kids.

Javelin toss the pitchforks. Put out garden sprinklers on hot days for kids and dogs to play in. At the farm last year, I would help my boss's 4-year-old build forts out of the harvest bins. Sit and sing on the salad spinners while they spin to make my voice warbly...

Shooting of the dreaded rubber bands is always good for a laugh... But don't hit the person, the rubber band must just miss them and land on whatever they're working on.. And the shoots must now figure who the shooter was and return the favor

We bend paper clips into what looks like a triangle. The ends are roughly a quarter inch apart, then carefully overlap them. When you drop them on the floor, they spring across the room. This was our safety guys idea...

It was SO embarrassing. But everyone laughed, & it was fun. No big issue with internet surfing, either. Lab hours are often extremely long & uncompensated for, so some "play" time while the centrifuge spins was not disallowed.

We had a stuffed-toy alien. It sat in the window sometimes, but it would disappear & reappear around the lab. One of my favorite places to hide it was inside one of the -80º freezers. You go to put your specimens in it and - there's this green THING.

My all-time favorite: take chunks of dry ice leftover from frozen shipments, put them in several sinks (don't use just any sink for this), & run a thin stream of water over them. When the room fills up waist-deep with the fog, duck down & pretend...

Or... getting paid for 40 hrs/week & working 60-80+ (grad students & postdocs, at least). A few minutes play is hardly keeping anyone from getting a job. And may keep those who work those hours a bit saner.
