The Detroit Bus Company is a private bus service. No standard routes; an app, a call or a text is all you need to get picked up in a bus ran on biofuel. All feature wi-fi, music, and you can drink your own alcohol! The payment system is far cheaper.

I do this same type thing for a weekend job. I think the concept has been proven on this one for years.

By the way, @Rebel, let me know if you ever need to rent a party bus in my area. ;)

I love the free market. But how can you get past the union controlled government officials?

After reading the article - it seems this amazing private company will take the "low hanging fruit" or the routes and areas that will make $$$ and government will do what it does and serve ALL the people of Detroit and surrounding

You can have an open container if alcohol in a moving vehicle? You can't even do that in Limos in Nevada anymore.

You can't? I haven't heard that. Any commercial vehicle that has a separate driver compartment can have alcohol. In fact. That is the rule in most states.

Similar services exist in NYC. It can work because they only service areas where there's enough business.

Your alternative is to continue subsidizing routes to pick up 2 people per day from somewhere?

Did that need to be proven? I thought that was obvious.

Private companies always have much better customer service. And they are better at managing money.

Individuals and some business that want to provide can do some neat things. The former president of our transit system (who also owns a private enterprise) wants to bring light rail to our city with his private company after he left public.

Where there is a demand there will always be a supply

That looks really interesting, although I think it's a bit more about routes than what the question implied, from the article that I read. I'm too tired to really absorb it right now, but the guy behind it sounds pretty incredible.

How is this possible? Everyone in Detroit is on welfare.

A lot of the service seems to be geared to youngish professionals commuting from the suburbs to downtown, and between suburbs, and to the airport, although much of it is in the planning stages right now.

So It's not just Detroit, but the surrounding cities too?

I haven't read this article carefully & I only looked at a couple of the places on a map, but it looks like mostly suburb-to-suburb & suburb-to-city, to me. I may have missed some in-city stuff though...
